1986 Bronco Axle code identification

I found a 1986 Bronco 4 x 4 in the Scrap yard with a 9" rearend. It has an axle code on the door of H6. Can anyone tell me what type (posi or open)and ratio it is. Should this be 31 spline axles?

There should be a tag on the axle cover. Similar to the one shown in My Garage, it's the little black tag. My 1990 Service manual doesn't show a H6 for a door tag number.
If you can get the tag information, then compare it to the tag in My Garage, the lower left number is the ratio, the next numbers to the right are the axle size, then the build date, the number on the top row is the plant data and model, sequence info.

This junkyard is around 15 miles away. The Bronco is on the ground with no wheels. I cant crawl under it unless I jack it up. I am allowed to jack it up if I buy the rearend. The door tag # is all I can get now. I appreciate any information you can find. Thanks Hubert

Is there another junkyard around? That one sounds like BS, you have to be able to determine what you are buying, before you buy it. I would go so far as to take the cover off to look directly at the gears inside. But I don't need a new axle.

Why do you need one?

Axle code

Its really not BS. I think it has something to do with the Cash for Clunkers Deal. There are 1500 CCD vehickles at this yard. When they come in they fill the engines with some mixture to lock them up. They are not allowed to sell any engine parts at all. What a waste. I found some 351W roller blocks and a bunch of GT40P heads which are being scraped. Its hard to find much good 9" Ford rearend stuff any more. I found (2) good centers but want to verify specs.before I pull out. will probably go back to the yard and reverify I cant jack it up. The best deals I can find on parts are at pull-a-part.com . They sell complete rearends for about $75.00 and engines for $80.00. Thanks foy your comments.

A 9'' doesn't have a cover to take off, it is designed more like the front end of our trucks with a drop out style 3rd member.
H6 should be a lsd with 3.50 gears, this is assuming noone ever changed anything in the diffs. All fullsize 9'' axles have 31 spline axle shafts from 1978 on.

Axle identity

I was thinking it was a limited slip just because it had a letter before the number. I didnt know about the ratio. Looks like a good buy at $100.00. Thanks
