Working on my daughters 97 Explorer 178K miles. Sets a PO442 code, which is gas evaporative system small leak. Replaced gas cap, same result. I took down the canisters in the rear over the tire and removed the vent solenoid. It's very rusty and I can blow right through it. It is stuck open maybe? I checked with the local Ford dealer and they want 92 bucks for a new one. Can't afford to just start replacing parts. The frame/holder for the canisters was so rusty I can't even replace it. I'm thinking about going to the u-pull-it and picking up the whole assembly- frame, canisters and solenoid. There's some good used stuff since the cash for clunkers program. Any help would be appreciated I don't want to put big money in this, just trying to get it through a couple of years till she's out of school. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Just to follow up maybe will help somebody in the future. Went to the pick-n-pull and got a new (used) vent solenoid, fuel vapor canisters, and vent solenoid with the mounting bracket include for ten bucks. Installed it and success! I got it off a 2000 explorer with 66K which was part of the cash for clunkers program. The good part is the mounting bracket on the new ones is plastic and rust free. It had an extra plastic box after the vent solenoid but the whole unit bolted right up on the 97 and plugged in fine.
