More V10'er ammo

Wow, blew the head gaskets AGAIN! Even after head studs, EGR delete and only 80,000 miles. This sucks, expensive month - not under warranty anymore.

Are you kidding?? You've done the "typical" upgrade mods for the 6.0 and you still popped the gasket??

Damn Scott, I feel for you bud. Even with all the joking I do about the six-leakers, I still feel your pain.

Out at the NHRDA Diesel Nationals in Redding last month, and the truck drags in Sacramento this past weekend, I really was envious of how much faster the 6.0's were compared to my 7.3, and that was with minimal mods to the six-oh's. I figured with the typical upgrades, the 6.0's HAVE to be more reliable than stock form. Now, with your popping of the head gasket, I really am glad I have a 7.3L.

Sorry bro....

Do you think it had anything to do with SCT tuner?

Sorry to hear that! Very unfortunate - especially after all of the work you've done to try and prevent it. This is why I have the V10 - it's certainly not because of the mileage.... How long ago was the head gasket work done - is it possible you may have some level of warranty?

Welp, thanks guys.
As for the SCT, I guess anything is possible. A lot of people use them without problems and I don't have it on a crazy setting. I also have a boost gauge that I keep an eye on, but again, who knows.
Original head gasket job with studs was done almost two years ago so no warranty. I have it at a different dealership than the original head job. I'm thinking the first guy may have missed something.

That same thought crept into my head after I posted.

Who provides your tunes via the SCT? Or are you using the canned tunes that came preloaded on the programmer?

Stewart

Edit: Nevermind. I opened my eyes and stopped speed reading and read your sig S - L - O - W - E - R and answered my own question

Stinks to hear about the issues. You have such a nice rig. I hope you are able to get her back on the road and trails.

I was thinking that too. Majorly sucks man, I feel for you. I pray my head gaskets don't go, but it seems that anyone that is going to have a problem with a 6.0 is going to have it in the first 60k. That's how it seems at least from what people say. I'm sitting at 185k and haven't had an issue, though I'm thinking of having the turbo rebuilt just in case, preventative measure if you will.

I hope it works out and the second guy does it right. Maybe the first guy didn't tighten the headstuds in order, or didn't put them to the right torque specs. Either way, it's a pricy fix, especially if it was someone elses mistake.

Good luck!

On second thought... What about overheating? Did the engine overheat the first time? Even a little bit? If so, it may have taken the heads slightly out of true, and they should have been resurfaced. If they weren't, that would cause a rapid repeat of the initial problem.

Blew the gasket with studs???? I think some one has an up graded gasket now. That might be worth looking into.

There was some talk of he 6.0 on another board I'm on, we have a ford tech there that goes from dealer to dealer and basically is who the tech's go to for help when stumped. There was some talk of when the EGR's get carboned up it causes parts of the cylinder heads to get really hot and warp. Something like that could lead to multiple blown gaskets. Maybe make sure the tech is checking the head thoroughly with a machinists straight edge for any warping.

It has gotten hot but never overheated. The tech is yanking the engine today and he is REALLY going to inspect the heads for cracks, etc. then send them out to a local machine shop to get them decked to make sure they are PERFECTLY flat. And yes Nick - good idea - we are looking into the Victor Reinz gaskets by Dana as opposed to the factory ones.

My head gaskets on my 6.0 went at 285,000. It was my work truck. I was pissed too I really liked that truck. That was an 04, head gasket went about a year ago. I remember cuz it would have no heat at an idle.
I am in an 06 now. Cool thing is I have a boost gauge that I can watch.
