Good starter but a real pain to get the top bolt in and out.
SMT0018 is a Mitsubishi gear reduction starter, the bolts are much easier but it is so long you have to turn it just right to get the nose cone started into the engine.
I personally like the Mitsubishi.
But I have to wonder about the quality with the price under 100 dollars.
That Nippondenso starter looks identical to the one that I just paid 200 dollars and some change for in my 480 Case tractor with a baby 4 cyclinder cummins.
I bought the 4th one down from them for my 7.3 (eBay). Including shipping, it was about $100. It works GREAT, and turns the 7.3 over crazy fast! Been on over a year, and has worked great.
I too purchased this starter through ebay from them over a year ago and had no problems at all. At the same time I replaced my red batt cables and since been rid of any slow cranking.
I don't need a starter, but I am liking these people already. The photos are detailed and huge. Its almost like they want you to actually be able to recognize what you are paying for. What a concept.
Currently running a mitsubishi and after cleaning the carbon dust out of it recently, its working perfectly. No idea how old it is but it was there when I bought the truck some 4 years ago.
That Nippo starter looks identical to a bosch starter that I was shown recently at the parts store.

It looks like the same one, because it is the same one... See them listed on e-bay lots with both applications listed.
When I have to pull my starter, I always pull the motor off it and install the gear reduction first. I then bolt the motor back on. I found it takes me about 1/2 an hour this way, but makes getting the top bolt in alot easier lol. Wonder what autozone would say if they knew I did it this way?
I saw a Nipondenso that looked like they had reclocked the motor a couple degrees so you could get the top bolt with an extension.
The originals had the motor right dead center in the way, a stubby wrench and very nimble fingers to get the bolt started was the only way.
When you could get your arm in position to reach the bolt hole, you could not see the hole.
When you could see the hole, no way you could get your fingers to the hole.
But the short starter chassis does make getting the starter in position much easier.
Well I ended up ordering the higher torque Nipondenso starter from DB Electrical.
I received it and went to install it. this unit requires a extension wobble to tighten the top bolt. you cannot do it with just the extension and the wobble type attachment, like i said you will need the extension wobble that is built into the extension. other than that I felt like it was easier to install than the regular Mitsubishi type.
I got the new one installed and when to start the truck. it fired up faster than it has ever since owning the truck. I did replace both batteries, the cables and starter at the same time, so that also has something to do with it. BUT, i heard a loud grinding sound. I pulled the flywheel inspection cover and watched as the starter was engaging the flywheel, it seemed to be engaging fine but was grinding and throwing metal shavings everywhere. fortunately the shavings are coming from the starter gear and not the fly wheel.
I called DB Electrical to see if there were any shims needed or if it should be just a bold on starter. he said sounds like the starter is at fault and they put another one in the mail headed for me. Once i get the new one installed I will post the findings.
