Got a question, mostly just out of curiosity...at my work we have a '97 Ford F800 flatbed truck. The interior, however, is that of an '82-86 F-series (even the steering wheel), except with the newer style radio.
I don't really understand what you are asking? Why did they use the same interior from a smaller truck? Or why is the exterior different? it's the same way now, the F650 uses the Superduty interior, but the body itself is different. I assume the body is different because it has to fit a bigger frame and bigger engine.
No I was asking, why the old style interior? Why not the '92-97 interior?
Moreover, considering the interior that's in that truck had not been put in a regular F-series in 10 years at the time of the F800's production, where'd they get that interior from?
I think that series of truck came out in '81 so at the time they probably took alot of parts "off the shelf" for the truck. I'm guessing there are some similarities between the cabs of the F700-800 and F150-350 of that time, which continued through the 700-800 run until the end. Why didn't they change the interior - probably cost. They adapted it to fit the "big truck" things like parking brake, upfitter swtiches, etc, and probably never felt the need to upgrade the dash. After all it is a truck, and a low-price, usually lower spec truck at that. Where did they get the interiors? I'm sure they had some supplier cranking out 81-86 dashes long after they were gone from the pickups.
GM did the same thing. The old style (70's-early 00's) C series / Topkick shared cabs with the pickups. And like the Ford, the Topkick never got an interior updrade after the dash change in 1995 and kept the 88-94 style interiors until the end.
BTW, the cab on our truck is a regular F-series pickup cab, except it's a bare bones deal, has a vinyl bench, no headliner, etc, and it has a fiberglass nose. I think that's how Ford does/did the F700/750/800 etc for a long time (dunno if they still do)
