I want to start changing my own oil. I have a 95' 300i6. They have been putting regular 5W-30. Can and should I start using a synthetic oil? Truck has 120,000 miles. If so, what brand and how many quarts. What type of oil filter as well?
I don't know much about Napa filters, but if it takes a few seconds to get oil pressure when you start cold, switch to a Motorcraft filter, and never use a Fram. What happens is the filter drains back when you shut off the engine, then it takes a few seconds to get oil to the bearings when you cold start. You may not have a problem with it,but it pays to be fussy about filters with the 300 six.
This is a question that is wide open to opinion and everybody has one. I have used"Mobil One" since before you could buy it retail and have been very happy with the results. I know that "Royal Purple" and "Amsoil" are excellent but many of the others are just not up to standards and are not worth the extra money.
In engines with flat lifters, you must now run oils that have a lot of zink or a substitute for zink and that pretty much leaves the high-end synthetics or the diesel oils.
I vote with "Breiser"
"Rotella T" would be a good choice.
It's hard to beat a wix or napa gold filter.
I have tried different filter brands and when I took the old filters off, I cut them open, big difference in how they are made.
purolator and mobile one 5000 never had problems...heard fram filter sucks...never tried the K&N filter but you could be just payen for the brand name if you baught those not sure. I try to stay away from bosch everything aswell
My 86 F-150 with the 5.0 EFI had 119,000 miles when I switched it from a life of conventional to Rotella-T Synthetic 5W-40. 6,000 miles later, no leaks, no consumption, no problems.

Highly recommend it.
Freaksh0w, how many miles do you run between oil changes?
