oil change

I want to start changing my own oil. I have a 95' 300i6. They have been putting regular 5W-30. Can and should I start using a synthetic oil? Truck has 120,000 miles. If so, what brand and how many quarts. What type of oil filter as well?

Thanks,
Ryan

I would say no problem with switching. Should hold 5 quarts. Personally use Fram filters. Have seen several people on here saying don't. Have used Fram all my life. Your truck, your choice.

i agree, if there is no advantage to synthetic why waste the money. but if there is ANY advantage I am willing to pay the extra $$.

I believe that you should use synthetics as soon as possible on a new engine. That's where you should see significant value for the "investment". I put M1 in my '01 Durango with 4.7 V8 at 500 miles and it still purrs like a kitten at 98K miles. I bet the innards are nice and clean.

In a high mileage or older engine I don't see the benefit. Good quality name brand oil will do just as well.

On the Fram - I've heard on a few forums about it's flaws.

I've been using Fram but on my next oil changes (both vehicles) I'll go with Motorcraft or Wix (sp?) or other high quality oil filter.

I would not switch to synthetic. Especially with 120k on the clock. Just keep your oil changed so its clean and that should be fine.

I have 275k on my truck with the original drivetrain. I have always just used conventional oil.

Don't use Fram. Use Motorcraft, Wix, or Purolator.
