I'm having some cold running issues and have diagnosed it to be most likely in need of the updated flash from Ford. As mush as I hate going to the dealer for anything I am thinking of getting this done by them for about $100.
My question is if I buy an aftermarket programer/tuner will that fix the heat update flashing that Ford's update does? And if so which one?
I just really hate going to the dealer. I do all my own repairs and maintenance but I can't do software unfortunately.
I think Innovative can now reprogram the FICM. But like stated above the Inductive heating flash is worth the money in my opinion, and yes its hard for them to screw it up.
Innovative Diesel or Power Hungry Performance can flash a FICM but you'll have to ship it to them and wait. I had the inductive heating removed to prolong the FICM life.

Just so everyone knows, we have a maximum 24 hour turnaround on FICM reflashing. If it arrives early in the day (depending on which carrier is used), we can send it back out the same day. If it doesn't arrive until our UPS pick-up, it's shipped out the very next day.

i don't really know if NC gets cold but with all your mods and the FICM flash do you notice any cold start issues? my truck has pretty much all new parts so i wouldn't think it would have trouble on the colder days of winter but that's one of the things that has me on the fence about getting ID to tune it. i have already had a FICM fry and i have one of the first IH flashes that i hear is hard the them. just wondering thanks!
Ford released a new inductive heating strategy earlier this year to replace the ih strategy that was frying the FICMs -- unfortunately, the rest of the calibration stinks.
Sure would be nice if they covered all those FICMs under a recall -- we get phone calls every day from 6.0L owners experiencing the exact same thing. Doesn't seem fair.
Actually you can flash the FICM with PT DIAG, you would need the file though.
I talked about PT-Diag with Kerby Suhre (one of the developers on the project) and he indicated to me that it is absolutely not available to the public and that anyone that has a copy of the software outside of Ford is in direct violation of Software Copyright and is running an unlicensed, stolen copy. Now, while Ford doesn't own the software, the engineer that wrote it was under contract with them and the software is not authorized to be distributed without Ford's consent.
Granted, I'm not ignorant to the fact that people will frequently use and distribute pirated software, but anyone who is using (or distributing) PT-Diag would probably be smart to keep it to themselves.

I'm not in NC, I'm in Ft. Smith, Ark. in the foothill of the Ozarks, so not much difference temp. wise in the summer time, but a little cooler in the fall/winter than Fayettenam. I do have cold start issues because of the FICM tuning I have, but expected it. I had to specifically request that the inductive heating be removed and I take other measures to counteract cranky starts. I have a cranky injector and I'm waiting on a replacement, but I'm also waiting on the flow bench so I'll know exactly what size they are. It's the nature of my beast. If you ID to flash your FICM give Eric a call or an email and let him know your concerns. He can pretty much take care of anything you want, as can Bill at PHP.
That is true, but there are people that do have access to it with a license. I personally don't use it, I use a tuner and Matt jerry rigged a deal to force feed my FICM.
I should have put you in quotes. Usually I am good about that, but it was late and way past my bedtime and that's what happens at my age.
No worries... I just didn't want folks thinking that the software was available for public consumption, which was kind of the way it came across in your post. As a calibration and software engineer that has written a number of reprogramming utilities (including among others, PCM and FICM reflash utilities) I do take *some* offense to pirated software.
Anyway, I'm glad Matt was able to get you helped out in your time of need. Some of those FICM flashes really suck!
