I recently bought a fe 390. apparently from a '69 merc. marauder. It's a 4 bbl /c6 auto. I'm not able to find any casting numbers on the block itself, there are none on the right side by the mount/freeze plug as with others i've seen,,.. but there are the numbers C8AE H on the right side of the head between the two centre plugs. Is this an acurate way to tell the year of the motor?, or just the year the head was cast ?. Does anyone know what compression ratio/ horsepower rating this engine is. ?... thanx..
There really isn't a way to id your engine by casting numbers as many FE's shared the same numbers. You'll have to measure the stroke to get a better idea.
you CAN'T ID Ford engines by casting numbers. The casting number indicates when that casting was first used.
Ford used the same casting numbers for years and in the case of engine blocks the same casting numbers were used for several different displacements.
So trying to use the casting numbers to positivley ID what engine you have is pointless. The only positive way to ID your engine is to measure the bore/stroke.

Since Ford cast ALL 352/360/390/410 & 428's as 352's, the block casting number is absolutely worthless for ID'ing what the engine size is.
The C8AE-H head (Ford part number: C8AZ-6049-M) was used in 1968/71: 390/428 cars & 360/390 F100/350's.
But....this head was also a FoMoCo service part replacement for 1965/67 352/390/410/428 heads, so...
