I just finished changing my oil and filter. For the last 4 years I had a service book I bought at the time of sale for this. I had a heck of a time getting the oil filter off. I ended up driving a large screwdriver through it several times to crank it, then it finally broke loose. So since my small strap wrench isnt enough what do you guys use? I will invest in the right one if I can find it. It seems I will need a pretty good size one to get it off. thanks Jeff
You can get a oil filter attachment for a ratchet. I don't have one though I usually don't need one but they are handy. Usually I can take it off with my hands and sometimes a paper towel to get a better grip and if it's real tough I wrap my belt around it a couple times and use my belt as leverage.
hi,Jeff I use a strap wrench from Sears. It's about 10"long handle w a long rubber strap. They came two to a pkg for $15. Called a multi something or other. I also had a hard time on the first filter. But no problem anymore, I make sure I clean the contact surfaces real good then oil the gasket like hell . Oh and don't over tighten! Do you have a fumoto? If not get one you'll love it.
This is the one I got. I got it from a local autoparts chain here called Salvo. It measures 4 and 3/4 inches when open and 4 and 1/4 inches when "closed". It also has the ability to fold the handle 90 degreees.
i've dealt with this same situation awhile back, i always had a tuff time getting the filter off cause i always put it on so tight, worrying about a leak, so on my "second" to last oil change i only tightend the filter as tight as i could get it with my hands. i watched it religously for a few days and it never leaked.
ten months go by, and it was time to change the oil again "which was just two weeks ago" and i got under the truck and had just remembered it was only hand tightend. i had to put alot of muscle into it but it came right off by hand. did the oil change and only hand tightend it again.
love it!!
I own 2 or 3 filter wrenches, but never need it for my own vehicles. I oil the gasket, spin the filter on 'till it stops with light pressure, then 1/2 to 3/4 more turn. Never leaks or comes loose, but removes with only a rag for grip. Filters with the rough black paint for grip is a bonus.
I hear ya on the Fram. I only use Motorcraft 1995's on my PSD, couldn't remember who made the gripper ones. Too bad others don't use it, it works!
I've got a can of spray undercoating gathering dust. I wonder if it would serve the same purpose? Maybe if I remember next change, I'll give it a try.
That's the one I use. The first time I changed the oil, I had to use that with an extension and a 1/2" drive breaker bar. That was after smacking a hole in the bottom of the filter. The previous owner had the truck maintained at a Jiffy Lube type place. Those turds must've installed the damn filter with an impact gun.
