The best filter wrench can be found at NAPA.
I forget the part number right now, but a picture from F350-6's gallery will give all the detail that you need.

I went into NAPA looking for that filter wrench because I heard good things about it from this forum and they said it didn't exist. They hadn't a clue about it. I finally gave up and used the one I posted previously. It's never let me down and it was a fraction of the price of that NAPA filter wrench. NAPA in this area sucks.

I use a filter wrench that looks like it has a "bicycle" chain on it. I purchase it when I first got the truck and couldn't get the filter off with the old screw driver through the filter trick. I don't remember the brand, but it works great.

I always loosen the filter enough that I can get it off by hand before punching a hole in the filter to drain the oil and before pulling the plug on the pan on the outside chance that the darn thing would be stuck so I can't get it off and need to get some help or have to drive it somewhere. That way I don't have a disabled vehicle with the oil filter stuck that is shredded to pieces.

I have one from Napa (probably the same one as mechelement) and it works great. It can also be used to remove the fuel bowl lid

I have several different size band type, but usually just use the channel locks like Barry has pictured here. I got them when my biggest band clamp was not big enough for a hyd. filter we had on a truck. They are great for getting off all sizes of filters.

If somebody tells me how to post a photo here, I'll show you a picture of the absolute very best working, filter wrench ever. Trouble is, I don't remember where I bought it, and it doesn't fit larger size filters.
I promise it's one some (maybe most) of you have never seen.

I use a "three legged" adjustable wrench from Sears -

Craftsman Universal Oil Filter Wrench, Auto-Adjustable

it cost less than $20 too, fits the filters for our trucks and just about everything else smaller

IMO, if you need a wrench to get it off, it is too damn tight. I tighten mine by hand and take it off by hand. Back in the day, 6 years ago, I'd hand tighten it, then go the extra turn with the wrench. It would be a BUGGER to get off. That is how I discovered the screwdriver wrench method.

Seriously, put it on by hand. Give it a snug turn by dry non-slick hands. It won't leak. Then you can poke it with a screwdriver on the bottom to drain the oil out. Then put a 1/2 gallon zip-loc bag over it and yes, remove it by hand with the bag over it. No wrenches period.

thanks for all the responses, I did get it off using the "drive a large screwdriver through it method" even with the screwdriver through it it was a bear. I had to drive the screwdriver through it almost 4 tiimes to get it off because I could only turn it so far whithout hitting something. I did finally put the new one on hand tight with a extra 1/4 - 1/3 turn by hand to tighten it snug. It hasnt leaked. The dealer was doing these changes while I had the coupon book for oil change , rotate tires and lube. Believe it or not, it was a bargin at the time because it was before oil went throught he roof. So I guess i made out. But now i am doing it all. Anyway thanks for the replies. Jeff

This style works great. I have a couple of different sizes in my tool box, I have yet to find a canister filter they will not take care of.

I do not normally need them on my Ford but on the wife's Dodge I have to use them everytime just to break it loose and I always put it on hand tight with a 1.4 turn?????Anyway...these Channel Locks are very handy and MADE IN USA

When I get to work today, I'll get the part number off of it and post back.
