What oil filter removal device does everyone use? After struggling a few times to get my FL-1995 off and on, I bought a strap-type wrench, but it slips too much to suit me. Surely there is something better. I wonder what the "professional Ford mechanics" use. Ford probably makes a special wrench, knowing them.........
I've got two wrenches. One on the end of each arm!
Seriously though, I put mine on as tight as I want by hand, and they always come off by hand too. I've added length to a regular strap filter wrench, and channel-lock pliers always come through in pinch.
Snap-On, Mac and such carry filter wrenches like the ones you can get anywhere for car filters (a metal strap that tightens on the filter the harder you pull on the handle) that are larger for truck filters. I have a Snap-On, you should be able to get one from NAPA or any truck parts supply store in your area.
I got a strap wrench at the local auto parts store for about $7. It was referred to as a "Truck filter" wrench, and is large enough to fit the larger filters. Another use for it: it's a handy way to grip and rotate a section of 4" exhaust pipe.
Those of you who are doing it only by hand must not have it on that tight. My Ford service manual says to tighten it by hand and then give it an additional 1.5-2 turns with a wrench.
If you have a strap wrench and don't want to by a new tool, use a piece of sandpaper between the wrench and the filter with the grit on the filter. I'm assuming you have a rubber strap wrench and not the chain type strap wrench.
Theres actually like a "socket type" that i use, mainly cause theres no way i'd be able to get a strap wrench on the filter, its like a big socket, and it fits on the bottom of the filter, and attaches to a 3/8 drive socket wrench, works great every time, except for when you get some oddball filter that doesnt have the groves on the end
Those of you who are only putting the filter on by hand must not be tightening it enough. My Ford service manual says to tighten it by hand and then give it 1.5-2 additional turns.
If you don't want to buy a new wrench use a piece of sandpaper between the strap and the filter with the grit on the filter side. I'm assuming you're using a rubber strap wrench and not the chain type for the filter.
