Recently got my first Diesel 2007 F350. I need to know what you guys recommend for motor oil. I will only be putting on about 7500 miles a year so from what I understand I could technically get away with doing a single oil change a year. ( Truck won't be working that hard). The kicker is that where I live (central Canada) the weather can vary from +40degC ( 104 Farh) in the summer to -40degC (-40 Farh) in the winter. Is there an oil that can work well in both these situations or do I need to run a summer and a winter oil in the respective seasons? If so what grades should I use?
I've had good luck with mobil1 5w-40 year around. I live in northeast wi so the weather is about the same. Change oil at 5000 miles no problems for 70,000 miles.
You will probably want to go with a full synthetic if you're going to run it in those temperature extremes without changing oil for seasonal use. There are a bunch of them out there. I've used Rotella Synthetic and Schaeffers Supreme 9000. The UOA on the Rotella came back at 30 weight after about 6800 miles, an indication of shearing. The Schaeffers was still at 40 weight after 7500 miles. I still have enough of the Supreme 9000 for one more oil change and then I'm going to try Blue Diamond from Chris at Lubrication Specialties, a site sponsor.
I think you will find this site is very helpful and informative. If you haven't already I would recommend that you check out the Tech Folder. You might also want to stop by the 2003 - 2007 6.0 section of the forum for information specific to your model year truck.
You'll find a plethora of oil threads in the 6.0 section of the forum and for the most part they are very lengthy. My recommendation is to use a synthetic oil and change it and the filter every 5K miles. As far as brands are concerned I think there are many good brands of oil, I would suggest that you pick one that is available in your area at a reasonable price. In most oil threads you will find that every major brand is listed as being used by someone with good success.
Also remember to use only Motorcraft or Racor filters for both oil and fuel.
