ok guys, was throwing a code for the vss so i put a new sensor in the rear diff. it didn't fix the problem i'm getting a code p0500 insuffecient vss input.where do i go next? the speedometer still doesnot work and the abs light is on. do i have to take the cover off of the rear and clean everything or is there somthing else to look at
i got it at advanced auto. is there a way to check the sensor to make sure it is ok and i've also read where some guys had to change the harness is that a dealer item only
VSS or vehicle speed sensor is read by the abs module by the rear differential sensor and then transmitted to the other computers via the can network. You need to get the abs module scanned to see if you have any codes there. Since the abs module light is on, then you will need to diagnose the code related to the abs module first. Could be the sensor, wiring, ring on diff, or even abs module itself.
My ABS light came on a couple weeks ago and here is what I found. Took the sensor out of the rear differential and gave it a wipe with a rag, then cleaned the connector with electrical contact cleaner. I unwrapped the tape off the harness / connector that mates up to the sensor and it was full of water and dirt. Took that connector apart and and cleaned with the contact cleaner then retaped, then used a little dielectric grease and connected harness back to sensor. Started truck and drove it around the block and ABS lite went out. Good luck.
The previous post from dc3655 was actually mine...I was on my brother in-law's computer and forgot to log him off and me on. Don't hold him accountable for my info/post. HA!
thanks i'll give that a try sounds easy enough one quick question though do you know where the wiring harness goes to does it go the icm does it plug into it or is soldered to a board thanks again

Sorry...can't help you there. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in with an answer for you.
thanks again atleast its a starting point before i have to take to the dealer and get raped
My dealer has been good to me for most things. I buy my parts there...I would very much like to see them remain in business. However, I avoid the service department like I avoid the plague...the tech's don't seem to take any pride in their work...my friend who is the service manager always attempts to make good on the mistakes...but it gives me the chills to take my truck there for anything other than warranty work. If I need repairs that I can't or don't want to tackle then I have other more reliable places to go. Good luck.
