So I have my 1977 F150 XLT SuperCab that is having quite the problem. The brake lights dont work, the blinkers work right on one side and are funky the other side, hazards dont work at all, reverse lights and running lights seem to be the only lights in the back working correctly! The front lights are perfectly fine. What on earth could be the problem? I have the wiring diagrams for them but since my dad has screwed up some wiring we are currently in the process of taking all the extra crap out. (this includes the trailer brake, trailer battery box and towing plug wiring) Any hints/tips/comments are helpful
What's more likely happening is that you have a bad ground or at least I'd start with that. Poor grounding can cause major problems with lighting with these old trucks. I'd start with making sure there are no bad spots in the wiring that could be grounding out and then clean up the grounding wires for the tail lights. Also look at the sockets. They can corrode something fierce and cause issues. Replace them if need be and the bulbs. In many cases people start with replacing switches, bulbs, flashers etc and end up only to find out there was a grounding problem.
Thanks. We're still tearing the dash apart finding wires that end randomly and that arnt supposed to be there. Found that its not easy taking the dash off without taking the steering wheel off lol (we dont have a wheel puller). So far we've replaced all the bulbs and fuses but so far we've only just gotten the back running lights working correctly. Thank god these trucks are "easy" to track anything on (vs my cobalt anyhow lol). Im sure we'll end up replacing the brake switch and definatly the turn signal switches because they are acting funky.
I love how parts on these trucks are cheap...now if only i can find a junkyard that carries one haha.
i already checked the grounding on the back, put a new screw and ground down to new metal so those are good (checked with tester). ive also checked the singal up front and it looks to be in the cab, so we are testing there now
just get it over with and replace the signal switch. i did that with mine and im glad i did. wasnt too painful, but the lights are nice and bright now and work like theyre supposed to
