Sunday on the way home from my trip up north I stopped at a little hole in the wall sunoco station for fuel. I always buy fuel at shell as they seem to turn a lot of fuel and I figure it is cleaner and water free. Yesterday I had to limp my truck home (would do about 20mph). I changed the filter and the fuel was dirty and gritty. I also drained the tank only had about 6 gallons left luckliy and it was also crappy. I guess I learned my lesson on this one.
Wosrt part is that I told my nephew this past weekend the same rule as he just got a 90 7.3 dually with 5 speed and was trying to get him on the right track with it. I also told him to join FTE and get on this forum but his old man told him not to trust internet advise. I really should have layed him out for that lol.
Hopefully he gets on here anyways. I've learned a lot of very valuable information being a member of this forum, and technically, really do learn something new everyday. When I had to rebuild my turbo, it was this site that I came to for information.
I have learned much on here as well. Before getting on here I knew nothing about diesels at all (didn't even know they didn't have sparkplugs). I still have alot ot learn but feel confident in what I do know and the advise on here that I would tackle any project.
i learned a lot here to and i only fill up in one place tp sp that dosent happen to me i know it suck my never left me on the side for the road but the driveway thats another story
I only fill up at one place too. Truck has a long enough range that I never have to fill up anywhere else and so far I NEVER had to drain any water from my filter.
Made the mistake of filling up and some non discript station on the side of the highway a few years ago and sure enough, water in the filter.
im a firm believer in shell fuels i always get the best mileage in my car and truck when runnin shell fuels.. walmart is cheapest around and its for a reason
yeah, well to the "dont take advice from the net crowd"
....learned the hard way about watching where you fill up....ran her pretty low and stopped at the only diesel pump i could find...10 miles later it would barley idle....we'll blame you internet folks for being late to the game- if you would have started this thread 3 weeks ago it would have saved me the incident to begin with (clearly everyone on the forums fault for not knowing how much gas was in my truck, or my schedule for the day)
then, after i get it home in a panic i post a quick note about what happened and then proceed to rockauto to start buying everything to rebuild the fuel system (it was that bad and in my mind if i am going to rip it open might as well replace everything)...several morons here said to load up a filter full of atf or diesel kleen and see what happens. your all a bunch of jerks, i really wanted to spend $800 and a few days of my time...how dare you all give me advice that fixes the problem in less than an hour for under 20 bucks....i am going to have to start shopping at the dealers again to properly go broke.
back when I was mechanicing I had to tow a 92 IDI back to the shop cause it died. They were empty on both tanks and they filled up at a station and continued back on the interstate when it died. Took the fuel filter off.......nothing but water (not good)....dropped both their tanks and out of the 32 gallons they pumped only 1 1/2 gallons was actually diesel fuel. needless to say after draining and cleaning the tanks, replacing the filter and replacing the IP cause he water killed it they were some pissed off mexicans. I think they even wound up suing the gas station for the repairs and the "fuel" they purchased.
On a side note... I know the government wants vehicles to get away from fuel and burn alternatives like water but geese.....lol
There wasn't any water in the fuel I bought back sure was a lot of real fine grit. I only had about 3000 miles on the filter it plugged up. The truck runs fine now but makes me wonder about my tank, may be a good reason to get the new 33 gallon plastic I have been wanting lol.
I don't know about you guys, but I always carry a new fuel filter in all my diesels. I don't know about the only filling up at one station because all of our fuel around here comes from the same place. There's a pipeline about 100 miles away. It doesn't matter whether it's a Sinclair station, Casey's, Bosselman's, etc. They all get their transport loads directly from the same pipeline. The only difference is in the grade they purchase. With regards to the water incident, it happens more frequently than most know. I've bought transport loads before and had a lot of water. What happens at these pipelines is they run either gasoline or diesel through them. Before they switch over to the other, they have to flush the pipeline. They use water to flush the pipeline. If you happen to be "lucky" and get a transport right after the flush, chances are it's going to have some/a lot of water in it.
