390 or 410

Hi guys I have two motors here that I am trying to figure out what exactly I have. One is out of a tbird - the valvecovers say so.... it also has a Holley on it.
the other is still attached to a C6 tranny ( I believe) casting numbers on the bottom of the block are C1ae6015G then below that is 1B 22:3
I will have to get the casting numbers on the 1st engine. My questions are simple.
How Do I tell what engine these are without the tell tale stickers on the valve covers?

I was told that the second is a 410 its complete from carb to oilpan and tranny..
the first is missing water pump, pulleys and distribiutor.

Any help is apprecaited.
Thanks
Chris

Numberdummy may happen by and give more particulars, but just based on what you posted:

C1AE would indicate an 1961 version of that block. That could be from a Tbird. Look at the motor mounts. FE motor mounts changed in the mid '60s. Two bolts vs. three, iirc.

1B 22:3, Could be a date code, 1 = 1961, B = 2nd month, Feb, 22 = 22nd day, thus 2/22/61. The 3 though....

A C6--C6s came along in 1966. Does the trans have a separate bell, possibly an aluminum bell and iron main case? A '61 would be the Cruise-o-matic.

410: '66/67 Mercury only. Basically, a 390 block with a 428 crank and pistons made to fit with the longer stroke. 4.05 x 3.98.

Due to the age of these, and the ability to mix and match FE parts, the only really true way to tell them apart is bore and stroke. Some, like 427s, have external clues like the 4 bolt main bolts on the sides of the block, or the side-oiler oil gallery on the driver side of the block.

Stand by, you'll get more posts and info. These should prove to be excellent finds if the blocks are sound.

yes the tranny looks strange in the manor. I was Assuming it was a c6.. there is a seperate aluminum bell housing then a steel center section and then an aluminum tail shaft. Only way I know this is because of the surface rust on the center section.

Thanks guys.. Any other way to tell the 410 to confirm its authenticity without tearing it apart?

just some FYI I would be willing to part with both of these for a fresh build or rebuild kit for a 302 with a mild cam and intake anf 4bbl.. I wanted to put this in my f100 but too much to change over .. I have one 302 .040 over that needs to be freshened up or my stock 302 to start I dont care I just need a solid motor that I can put back in my truck with AC. So you get the idea.. If anyone wants to swap motors out Im in Missouri about 1 hour south of St. Louis Mo directly on the missisppi river.
Thanks
C

First off, there is no way is the second one factory 410 since it is a 1961 block and the 410 was only available in 1966 and 1967.

Just because the valve cover says T-bird does not mean it came out of a Thunderbird. What are the numbers on that block? The numbers on the heads would help too.

Chris,

I'm not clear from your posting that the supposed 410 is the one with the 1961 stampings. I agree that unless you owned the engine from new there is little you can rely on to sort out what the engine is. If it is a 410 then it is a pretty good starting point, even a true 390 can be built into a monster, but the 410 will produce more torque although pistons can be harder to source.

You can measure the stroke through a spark plug hole, although I have had difficulty with that method. It is worth taking the oil pan off the 410 and looking for the "1U" stamping on the crank. That is the gold standard for identifying a 428 crank, and if you have one you will probably find a taker for the 410.

Pull the pan and check the crank number
