I would agree with jowilker. If it was a points system, that would be different. I would go farhter than jowilker and say, unless you have an all out race motor, the msd is a waste of money.
MSD may be fine, I've never owned one personally, but the Duraspark is cheap, available, and very tunable once you understand the recurving process. I've just read too many posts with MSD problems to buy one. Duraspark may fail but a whole lot cheaper to fix. But just my opinion.

True about the cost. You can carry a spare Dura-spark box and sensor (trigger/stator/pickup if you prefer) for way less than the msd is gonna cost you.
I will say one thing for the MSD - it cures cold-start problems, and band-aids lots of other tuning or cam screw-ups.
The multi-spark is a good thing when you're running the hairy-edge even with "only" a 290/290 cam.
Then, if you get the rev-limiter version (6AL), you can keep your motor together when you drop that transfer case driveshaft while mudding with your foot to the floor
I also think the duraspark is fine i turn 6000rpm, no problem with one. My buddy doesn't like them dirt tracking the durapsark box, so he uses the msd 6t box with a ford dizzy. We thought maybe the vibration or valve spring pressure may have been the culprit.
I personally want to try a crane cams hi-6n box, it has an adjustable dial rpm limiter. I have heard complaints of msd limiter plugs being off.
