I have been hearing on occasion (not constant) an awfull noise under the hood. Even when I turn on the ac it doesn't change the depth of sound. I took the belt off and spun the idler pulley, tensioner, and ac pulley. When I spun the ac pulley I notice quite a bit of play (wobble). last summer sometimes I needed to give the clutch a bit of perswasion in order for it to kick in. Is this play (wobble) in the pulley normal? I've never had to replace an ac clutch so I don't have any experience to go on. Thanks!
OK, heres my thought. I've read that shims in the clutch can be tinkered with. That would fix the problem of it not engageing. I did find a bearing locally. I just may go this route rather than replacing the entire clutch assembly. Any thoughts or suggestions?
I've had this exact failure on my 97. I waited too long, the pulley bearing seized, and my truck rode home on the back of the AAA flatbed because the seized pulley locked the engine up tight. Prior to the catastrophic failure, the clutch plate had been rattling when disengaged. I had purchased a replacement plate from AutoZone but found it wasn't a correct fit. Got sidetracked and didn't follow up right away in getting the correct part. Couple of weeks later, the whole thing went south...
I ordered the Motorcraft pulley and clutch plate from forum sponsor Rockauto. You will need Motorcraft part numbers YS250 & YBR111RM. Less than $100 if you order them.
Found Motorcraft pulley w/bearing!! I couldn't wait to have it shipped to me. I checked Craigs list an I found the pulley at Ford dealership about 1/2 hour from here. The bearing is already pressed in the pulley. It cost me $45 and about 45 min to replace. Plus, I changed the shim so the thing is all better now. Man this forum has saved me a ton of money. I don't know if it's been done yet but I did take pics I could post. Heres the part.
