I've got the chance to buy a '96 F150 5.0L XL regular cab with a 8' bed. It has 71k miles on it. The only thing is it has a problem staying running. It will start fine and run for a while then it just dies. It will not fire when starting fluid is used and that tells me that the trouble is in the ignition circuit. I'm thinking maybe the ignition module.
The underside of the truck is dry with no oil or fluid stains. The body is straight with no apparent rust. The interior looks pretty good also.
Now here is the kicker the owner is buying a Honda (He doesn't need a truck any more) and was offered $500.00 trade-in. He'll sell me the truck for the $500.00 and just add that to the price of the Honda.
I would have called the rollback already, lest the next door neighbor offer him $600. before you come back!
If you want to be extra careful, do a (obviously, cold) compression test on it. Then buy it! LOL
Here's the "Good Condition" value of it, to let you know what it may be worth once it's repaired (change to YOUR zip code to check values in your area):
I don't have to call the rollback as I drive one. I gave him a deposit for it this morning. I'll complete the deal tomorrow. The enthusiasm shown by you guys was all I needed to decide on the purchase. I'll tell the wife about it Tuesday. I'll show her the posts here as additional argument ammo.
I'll get the pics. I spent about an hour going over the truck today. I helped the guy clean it out. He's a pack rat. The only rust I could find on it is over the drivers door in the gutter. The AOD cutout switch is broken off of the shift lever. There are four codes set. The basis for a couple of them is the main vacuum hose, off the front of the manifold, that is dry rotted through. There is a new battery and alternator. The plugs were done last Nov. maybe 3k miles on them. There is moisture in the Right headlamp housing. It has dual tanks but there is something wrong with the sending unit in the front tank. I'm looking forward to the project.
Well I gave him the money and a ride to the bank so he could get a check for the dealer he is buying a used Honda from. I then dropped him off at the stealership. I am bringing a bill of sale to him tomorrow. I'll pick up the truck then.
