I currently own an 89 f250 single cab 4x4 with an automatic. I've rebuilt the motor about 10 yrs and 30k miles ago but the body is beat to hell. I've come across a couple of donor trucks and i have a few questions.
The first donor truck is an 89 f250 4x2 with a 5 speed. The second truck is an 89 f350 4x4 crew cab, but it's missing the front axle and the motor, but the body is straight.
What I would like to do is take the f250's and use them as donor trucks. I'd like to put the motor out of my current truck into the f350 along with my transfer case (bw1356) and then use the 5 speed tranny from the 4x2. The 4x2 has a 351 so that should work out no problem. The f350 has a 4.10 rear end but my current 250 has 3.73 i think. So I'll need to swap the rear ends to use the 3rd member/front axle from my current 250 on the 350. I don't know if the f350 had a 5 speed or an auto, so I'm just going to assume auto.
Is there any reason I can't do this? I have 3 trucks, all the same year.....the only other thing I can see being an issue is the front wiring harness in the f350 being for a 460 or something, but i have harness from the 250's. What else should I be looking for?? TIA
The 2wd trans wont work with 4x4, you would need to completely disassemble it to get the correct tailshaft in. I would recommend keeping your 89 250 and getting a new body onto it.
then just swap all the drivetrain components from the 250 into the 350. u will need your motor tranny transfercase and possible have custom drive shafts made for it
OK, for this swap you will need from your 250 (I wouldnt bother with the trans from the 4x2)
Engine
Transmission
Engine Wiring Harness
ECM
T Case
Front Axle
Rear Axle
Front Springs?? Not sure on this one. Small blocks had different springs for sure, dont know if they veried between ttb and solid axle.
And if the 350 was a manual:
Floor pan (Where the shifter went through)
Dash Cluster
Column pieces
Trans shift linkage
Well this worked out much better than I hoped. The 4x2 truck got sold, so that's off the table. The f350 I bought was picked up at auction. The running gear and drivelines were taken off to do a 4x4 conversion on a E250/350.
Anyway, I thought I would share the pics. I'm thinking for $400.....I came out pretty good.
