So I got a 1986 ford bronco through a trade so I lost a 97 ford tarus...lol
Anyways its a 1986 Bronco, 300ci inline 6, 4speed NP435 Tranny, 9in rear, dana 44 TTB in the front, stock, with 3.5:1 Gears.
The build; Now I want opinions on this, i will consider anything.
I was thinking about a dana 44 SAS in the front, 6" lift, and 37-38" tires. I want to put somthing like 4.56:1 gears front and rear. For the engine, bore'ed 0.030 over, offenhauser intake with holly 4 barrel, comp cam, headman headers ect.
Now what i need help with is what cam should i get and will a beefed up dana 44 with low gears hold up to 38" tires, this will primarly be a mudding, off roading vehical. I love the inline six so i would like to stick with that, I want max torque I dont care much for hp. Any feedback would be great.

Amen, to keeping the 300. Personally wouldn't trust that much unsprung weight under even a solid D44. Some will argue... and you might never have an issue but, mud running is typically high revving and a lot of wheel spinning. That is gonna spell early failure for u-joints and knuckles. If you don't mid replacing these parts, then it won't matter anyway. My $0.02
I would think the U-joints would hold up well with low diff gears, the powertrain ends up working less due to the torque factor, I know keeping the 3.50:1's is not an option.
Haha and thanks for the support on the 300. I have a EFI in my 1995 and it runs so nice, smooth power and all the torque I need for driving. But i figured a well built one would be nice in a big lifted 80's bronco, plus I still might get 10-15mpg
300s are amazing. If you send the head out for porting, it will make an enormous difference. The guys at fordsix have mentioned that 350hp is about the limit on a factory head casting with lots of porting work. But a 350hp 300 is no joke, that's a serious pulling motor.
p.s. A 300 won't require quite as much gearing as a 302 or 351 would. I take hills on back roads in my 300 Bronco in 5th gear at 40 mph. They're as close to a diesel as you can get without burning #2.
i would for sure run 5.13's. remember it not just the size of tire but the weight that also account for power loss. personally speaking 36-37's would be max for a D44 unless you dump a bunch of cash and at that point you probably should move up to a D60. Check out Cage Offroad for there SAS install kits.
Alright guys I have an update. I might not stick with the 300 plan anymore. I offered to buy my neighboors F250 this evening. He most likely will go through with the deal. Its a 1984 F250 4X4, with a 4speed NP435 tranny and 3/4 ton axles. Also it has a 460ci...
SOOO Im probibly going to buy the F250, and swap the powertrain into the bronco...What do you all think?
actually yours looks like it body is in much better shape than mine.- i have to replace all the sheet metal infront of the firewall
460 will sure turn it into a powerhouse, but i wouldn't worry about axles too much- the f250 would have TTB as well. you could however swap the engines and sell or drive the f250.
