2nd fuel tank???

Has anyone done something like this...

http://www.rdsaluminum.com/auto-auxiliary.html

I stopped at a convenience store the other day and actually saw someone with a newer V10F350 very similar to mine filling up with gas. Then I saw him take the nozzle and stick it in the bed. I said WTF???? and had to go over to see what he was doing. He had one of these in the link above, said it held 60 gallons. But he had it on a manual switch on the box itself and had to get out to transfer fuel from this tank to the stock tank.

I'd like a switch in the truck and maybe a little pump or something to transfer it over.

Anyone done anything like this?

I don't mind the 10-13mpg at all, but the 30 gallon tank (that reads below empty with five gallons still in it) is bull poo-poo.

everyone is concerned about the 5 missing gallons of fuel as if Ford couldn't get it right.
The intank pump is cooled by the fuel that surrounds it in the tank.
So nothing is missing you should be greatfull that its still in there doing its job.

edit: A tired brain and too many tabs. Sorry for the unrelated post

I used to run one of these tanks on the back of my F-450 ranch truck. It was however a diesel truck. I had the 60 gallon fuel tank with tool box top set-up. I used the tank to hold extra fuel for both my truck and for filling farm/ranch equipment. I made use of an electric pump for transfer of fuel into what ever was needing it. I picked mine up at a local Northern Tool store.
On my F-550 I have an American Tank, this tank that holds 90 gallons, when I run low on my 18 gallon factory tank, I flip a switch and the fuel in pumped direct into the trucks fuel system. This give me an additional 1,200 miles or so in addition to the few hundred miles from the Ford factory tank. I had a chance to meet the owners of American Tank up in Frisco, TX the other day at their shop. Mike and his wife are a great couple of folks. They build their tanks from scratch, there in the shop and stand behind their product with pride. They have different tanks on their website, but can build any size and shape needed. They not only build tanks but can fab up just about any thing you would want that can be made out of diamond plate. One of the things they do is use a heavier gauge diamond plate than other manufactures.
Matter of fact, they are doing some custom fabrication for me out of diamond plate for trim and customization on my F-550 Ranch hand bed.
If you are giving serious thought to an aux tank, you owe it to yourself to give these folks a call.

Why not consider a replacement tank? Transfer flow makes a 47gal. tank for your SB '09.

I have a 50 gal aux tank toolbox combination that I pump into the main tank with a Holly rotary vane pump that is controlled form inside the truck. I also have a fuel gauge inside the cab so I know when the tank is empty. I installed a fitting in the filler hose and the vent hose so the tank is vented into the the trucks system so I don't get any trouble codes.

Zedrive-I'm not "concerned" about the missing five gallons. I'm making the point that it's actually a 25 gallon tank if you can drive it past "0 miles until empty" and still only put 25 gallons in the truck. My Mustang is supposed to only have a 16 gallon tank. I've put 16 gallons in it before. Nothing blew up, the world kept rotating.

Being a "work truck" and supposedly for towing big loads, you'd think Ford would put a decent size fuel tank in them. It's my only gripe about the truck. 10mpg, no problem. Having to fill up every 250 miles, problem.

They still make Tab?

vardashan-I didn't know there was an optional tank. I'll check it out. Thanks.

rvpuller-do you by chance have any pictures of your set up with the pump?

jonrjen-are they reasonably priced?

I think the price is reasonable in comparision with a like product. Now when making a comparision you can't compare the price of a transfer style tank with that of a tank that is designed to be plumbed into and feed your truck at the flip of a switch. The RDS may be a little less money if you can find it on sale at Northern Tool and take delivery from a retail location. Anyway you look at it shipping can be a killer on any product this size and weight.
I can also attest to the fact that I have had no leakage on my American tank, where on the RDS tank I never could fill it all the way due to fuel sloshing around in the tank and would leak up around the filler caps and where the transfer pump were located. And again American Tank uses a heavier gauge aluminum plate on all of their product.

This is what I'm using http://www.handyindustries.com/shop/...uct=15&D=2&S=6 the one we have is about 12 years old and a different model than the one shown. Mine has two lids and the fill was not covered so I made my own. The pump is located under the box so I don't have a photo of it. The box is now painted white and has aluminum tread plate on top to match the other boxes. I made a bracket to hold my transmission gauge, aux fuel gauge, lighted switch and my Brakesmart controller.
