Na, cars had limiters long before induction of OBDII.
You will have to find a chip....Jet, Hypertech, etc... that has the govenor override feature. Any I have seen in the past do.
At that point you had better be watching your RPMs, b/c that might be what is causing the gov. to kick in in the first place!
Have fun!
i can assure you that my truck did not have a speed limiter from the factory, i can also assure you the front end gets lofty when the speedo is wrapped around to 35mph lol
My 91 shuts off somewhere around 100. While still holding the pedal down It dies out for about 5-6 secs then goes again. Back when I had a tach it was at 28-2900 RPM in 5th.
My 7.3 will go till its out of power (3100 RPM, 105MPH)
Either way yea, not going much faster anyway if it is limited in some way, defeating it for another odd 10mph or so ain't worth the trouble. Not when driving a stock underpowered, over geared, heavy truck with the aerodynamics of a large dumpster.
I don't see the point to removing the speed limiter or governor on these trucks. There is a reason its there. The 1st Gen Lightning was limited to 110 I believe, and it is much more capable of handling high speeds than a regular truck. Most if not all truck tires are not rated for speeds much over 100 anyway. Also, Where can you really go that fast anyway? I have had my truck pegged before, but that was only a few times in the 10 years I have owned it.
I dont know the particular year when they came about in fords.
In my old GMC truck(1990 model), it didnt have one, yet my buddys 92 did.
I would dare say that pretty much anything prior to 1991 or so wouldnt have one.

i just had an idea
If i ran a wire to the positive side of the coil to a switch inside the cab, could i bypass the limiter when i hit the switch? by putting power straight to the coil?
and i do plan on getting higher rated tires, but i dont know what mine are rated for
(btw its not a stock engine the guy i bought it from said it had a HO Mustang 302)
There was a thread here some time ago covering the speed limiter. Do an advanced search and put in PSOM and posts by frederic and you should find it. From what I remember the limiter may be programmed into the PSOM but you would have to read through the posts.
Forget about the wire to the coil.
A couple of questions for you.
How do you know you bumped the speed limiter?
Did you feel the engine turn off?
Did you feel the engine turn back on when your trucks speed was reduced?
Another type of speed limiter is wind resistance. It is easy to tell when this happens as the engine keeps pulling but the truck will no longer accelerate.
Your overall gear ratio (Transmission and rear end gears) will also limit your speed.
And last, but the most important question......
Your tires can handle the speed, can your truck? Can the road? Can those around you? Can the driver?
I have driven some insane speeds on the highway over the years. I was lucky and never had an accident, at any speed. LUCKY.
1. i know i bumped the speed limiter because i have a manual tranny, so when the engine shut off and came back on it jerked alot
2.yes
3.yes
4.mazda 5-speed (will hit the limiter in 4th gear) 3.55 rear end gears
5.dont know if the tires can handle the speed but i do plan on getting some that can (T rated or higher)
6.i know i wasn't really pushing the truck yet, and i would ONLY try if the traffic was VERY low, and yes i think i can handle a bit more speed.
i dont know about like 150 or something but 110 or 120 then the engine would probably run out of power
One more thing I have learned.....when you blast past somebody and see them holding their cellphone like they are taking your picture......they are....and like my oldest son found out, after they call 911 and you're pulled over, they will give the video to the cops and your luck ran out.
