I have a 2000 Ex 6.8L with 37" tires and I just put in 4.88 gears. I am getting a whirring noise at 65 mph (No its not the tires.) and at 73 mph its ungodly loud and annoying. Thought it was the gears so the shop swapped them out with new ones (US gears) and still there. Then they thought it was the driveshaft, way out of balance. so they balanced it and it took 6oz of weight on one side!!! still makes the noise...when I drive 70 it makes the noise, then I put it in neutral and it goes away. When Im in park, and rev the engine, it doesnt make the noise...Im baffled.
Since you have 37 inch tires I'm going to assume you lifted your Ex. If you didn't do any driveshaft modification then is sounds like you're going to have to shim up the pinion angle, or have a cv joint installed on your driveshaft. Give us some details about the lift (springs, lift blocks ect.) and maybe we can get ya dialed in.
Its got a 8" suspension lift from superlift. I got the driveshaft checked out and they said its good to go except for the balance which they did balance it. Does not have a cv joint installed on the shaft. I'll ask the axle shop if they shimmed up the pinion angle. The front is all springs for the lift and the rear is dual blocks 4" blocks. My axle guy said the pinion angle is not excessive and well within tolerance.
I have a 4 inch front/2 inch rear lift and it was enough to kick out the driveline angle. I tried just using 4 degree shims which got rid of the humming at freeway speeds, but I got a bad shudder when i got into it hard from a stop or towing a heavy load, so on top of the shims I had a driveline shop graft on a cv joint which got rid of just about all the vibrations. Mine is a 6.0 Diesel so I don't know if there is a difference in driveline lengths and how that would contribute to your problem. If you took it to a shop that does lifts than they should have had enough sense to use tappered lift blocks. I would talk to them first, then if you dont have any luck take it over to a shop that does just drivelines and have them measure out your angles. It could be you're streching out your driveline too far and you're not getting enough mating area on the two halves of the driveshaft. 8" Lift is a good size lift and I couldn't imagine you not needing some sort of driveline modification. Hope this steers you in the right direction and good luck.
Yeah that actually helps. My axle guy told me he was going to check the pinion angle next if swapping the gears to 4.56 didnt do it. So he is supposed to have done that today so I will find out tomarrow and let you know how it went. I will also ask him what the drive shaft shop said exactly and maybe go talk to them directly. I think the DS would have to be moded for it to work properly. Well atleast the noise is above 70 mph which I rarely drive. Hey Rosco, did you noise sound like a hum or whirring type noise that got worse the faster you went???
You sure its not just gear noise? Most numerically higher gears will make some more noise, and different brands can be quite a bit louder than others. I know richmond gears are known for being noisy do to how they cut them. This is a common complaint in the performance aftermarket when doing gears. Is there any vibration associated with the noise?
You say the noise goes away when you put it in neutral. Does the noise change as you go from accelerating/coasting?
there is no noise until 65. gets worse when you go faster than 65. goes away when put in neutral.. Side note, the shop swapped drive shafts with an ex with a harmonic balancer and the noise went away...
Well they got the driveshaft back from getting the cv joint put on and they said that it wont work since who ever did the lift, they used 2-4" blocks in the back and its messing with the drive shaft angle. Spring shop wants 600 for add a leaf and new blocks and re arching....this is getting to be a major head ache.
I understand what you are going through, because I went through the same thing. You can get most of the vibration out of the Ex but not all of it, unless you just take it back to stock. I considered the later until I just decided to play with it until I got it close. Remember the engineers at Ford are probably a lot smarter than the people who design aftermarket stuff. Good Luck, Chris.
They were going to get another shaft like the one they put in, but it was a used one fro winsconsin and would be several weeks. I have to have my truck fixed sooner. they are going to put in a new stock style tapered block with a new spring pack. Dropped the truck off today. The shaft that was made with the cv joint would not work until the axle wrap issue was fixed. We will see tomarrow cause the truck is supposed to be done with everything. Keep those fingers crossed!!! PS, should I also get them to double check the pinion angle when the springs are all done, or just test drive it and if the noise is gone, dont worry about pinion shims.....
