what do you guys do to clean your engine bay? me and a buddy of mine went muddin yesterday and my truck was rediculously muddy. Neither of us got stuck suprisingly, anyways this was the first time my truck has seen this much mud and my Engine Bay went from Clean to Muddy as hell, Ill post pics tomrow. Im still working on cleaning the chunks of mud and all the other crap out from under the truck, I'd like to get it as clean as possible without hurting anything. I've heard of ppl just spraying everything down with the hose but I dont wanna try something and screw something up.Thanks in Advance...
I hose mine down regularly, I dont drown it but I do it twice a year once mid winter to get all the salt off and usually another time end of winter, some times I will also do it in the summer with that black magic engine detailer... I thinkit has some silicone or something in it, keeps it clean and shiny, also helps to repel the dirt!
ok, I was thinkin since I gotta wash the underside of the hood off maybe the water coming off of that will wash some of the motor off... do you do it while the engine is running?
I've been searching around on here and almost everybody that has washed there gasser engine down has had a Coil failure after they washed it... although my truck is still under warranty (extended) I might just have the dealer clean it up since it goes in for the 60K mile full service soon... just to cover my **** if a coil does decide to take a nap.

You just have to be careful. I personally bought two different types of GUNK and sprayed the engine bay down, and then went in with a rag. The GUNK works well on it's own with no force needed to be applied. Then I also hosed the engine down, but I was mindful of the COPs. After the fact, I took my commercial grade backpack blower to the engine on the highest setting and worked around the coils. Started it up 3 minutes later. No problems to this day.
I was looking at it more today and its not as bad as I thought, a lot of it I can prolly do by hand with a damp rag and some simple green... heres the aftermath and a small vid my sister took... I was in 2wd majority of the time.
my buddy in his '85 F350 decided to go thru the pond(after some peer pressure lol) his truck is sittin on a 3" body lift, diesel springs and 35" Super Swamper SSR's powered by a 460 with 4.56 gears
I have had good luck in the past with some plastic bags over the senstive components. Then a rinse of water, simple green everywhere, let it sit 10-15 minutes, rinse off. That usually removes most of the big stuff. Then if I want it looking dealer prepped, I buy the cd2 enginse detailer( 2 part system, easy easy to use) for about 8 bucks. It saves alot of time and headache as most of the rubber items will stay brown from mud with out armor all or something. I used this remedy for many off road outings with my 96 f150. The cd 2 sprays on , gets hosed off, then has another can that is tough stuff that makes everything shine like new and lasts awhile. The only drawback to it is you will get the treatment on you when you turn wrenches on your truck, but it easily washes off skin, not so easy on clothes though
I use Mean Green - pick it up at the local Dollar General store, spray it on the entire engine bay, let set for 10 minutes then spray with water. Then get out some Son of a Gun tire foam ( at Dollar General store too ) & foam the entire engine bay. Then it looks brand new. Trust me, it will look really nice.
You can buy Simple Green anywhere (Walmart, any parts store) but TSC sells it by the gallon jug far cheaper than buying it by the spray bottle. Use an old sprayer or buy a new one and save yourself a bundle.
Wow that really does save a good amount. Its on sale now at TSC for $9.99 where the Walmart has prices ranging from $20-$45. I already have a yard pump sprayer that I can use. Thanks for the info.
