cam question

I am thinking about changing cams (do to the fact I have to open it up to replace a head gasket). I am looking of opinions on what cam I should go for and what kind of power I should get.
What I have;
428 cid 30 over
port/polished
RPM intake
770 holley w/2" spacer
9:1
2800 stall
Headman headers
stock non-adjustable rockers
Comp cam, Hydraulic flat tappet
<TABLE class=overvw><TBODY><TR><TD class=overvw-labels>Basic Operating RPM Range</TD><TD class=overvw-midmargin></TD><TD class=overvw-data>1,300-5,600</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
<TABLE class=overvw><TBODY><TR><TD class=overvw-labels>Duration at 050 inch Lift</TD><TD class=overvw-midmargin></TD><TD class=overvw-data>218 int./224 exh</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
<TABLE class=overvw><TBODY><TR><TD class=overvw-labels>Advertised Duration</TD><TD class=overvw-midmargin></TD><TD class=overvw-data>262 int./270 exh.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>0.513 int./0.520 exh. lift
<TABLE class=overvw><TBODY><TR><TD class=overvw-labels>Lobe Separation (degrees)</TD><TD class=overvw-midmargin></TD><TD class=overvw-data>110</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

I am looking for more power but it needs to remain streetable. I am not using the truck for mud drags anymore so I dont have to follow rules anymore. Thanks for any help.

I'm runnin the compcams XE274H and according to Barry R that is at the limit of the stock non adjustees.
Thats .562/.565 lift
dur @.050 230/236
adv 274/286
lsa 110
recommended stall 1900-2900
I like it alot, great midrange power, kinda choppy. And by your build, the compcams dyno says that it is the best choice for what you want:
419hp @5000
477tq @4000
The max tq seems high in the rpm but it's over 450 by 2k so it still has the low end. This is what is says is best from Compcams. Dont know about other brands. I sure like it though.

Yeah i like the Comp Cam grinds myself.. and the 274H is a good cam and thats right at the limits as Barry said.. I have the 264H in mt 395" build...and it not enough for me..So the next one will be much bigger along with other upgrades..

There use to be a guy on here RandyB12..you may look up some of his posts..I believe Randy ran a Edlebrock RPM cam in his 4x4 and was still able to smoke the hides and he has some big A$$ mudders on it too..

I think with his whole edlebrock set-up with a .030" over 390 he was running at about 410/420hp..and the RPM cam still had plenty of low end.. JMO

477tq @4000 quote]

Are you sure about those numbers? I really think I have more than that now. I could be totally wrong, its happened in the past once or twice.

Anyway, I stated that I needed to open it up because the head gasket needed replaced. This assumption was due to the white smoke. So I pulled the valve cover and cranked it over and discovered #3 intake isn't opening. The push rod is hardly moving. So, lifter or a flat lobe?? Either way I am a little more serious about what would be a better cam. If the lobe is flat, do I need to be looking for something other that a comp cam? This is the first one I have ran and it dosen't have many miles on it but they are very hard miles.

If I went with the cam you guys are sugesting, will it still be streetable? I want it to run hard but I dont want to have to fight it either. Thanks for any input.

I also purchased the XE274H cam for my 390 that's in a 69 Mustang. I've been a little busy lately so it not installed yet but I'm really excited to get to it. RPM intake, headers, ported heads, etc. but I'm going to run it with roller rockers and machine end supports for the rockers shafts.

If you have no movement on a pushrod, let me know if your lifters look like this when you pull the intake,

Have you thought about running a hydralic roller from Comp or Crane?Look on Comps or Cranes web page for the specs., it might be what you need. Just my opinion.

rollers are nice and if you can afford the whole kit kabootle then it's far better. As for the hp/tq numbers..sorry that's what the dyno says. lol What heads are you runnin? maybe they are better than I'm givin them credit for. And yes the xe274h is streetable. It's actually quite smooth cruising around.

Oh, and those lifters look like they've been through a war! ouch!

I was only giving him a different option to check into since no one mentioned the hydralic rollers. He also mentioned that he wasn't racing it.If money isn't a issue he might like the hydralic rollers. If money is a issue, then the XE274H that has been mentioned is probably a good choice.

I am going to pull it apart today and see what I have. New cam is ordered and should be here mon or tue. I ordered the same cam that I had. The reson is I would give up low end going with the 274 cam. This engine ran so great before with all that low end that I decided to stick with it. Thanks for all your help. I will let you know what I find when I get in there.

Just to let you know the numbers with the XE262H, the one you're going with are 396hp/5k and 494tq/2500. Great for low end. Happy building.
