I am not sure if i should put this here but anyway....
I am looking at my first diesel it would be used a work truck. It is a 1999 f-450 4x4, it has the 7.3 diesel with 83,000 miles. It also has a 10ft contractors box. This truck would be used to pull a trailer with a bobcat loaded on it, and then i guess rock or whatever in the bed.
Like i said it my first diesel what do i need to look for.
no answers... well once you go diesel you'll never go back. just make sure everything works. GET A OASIS REPORT and a carfax. the oasis report you need to get from a Ford dealer. It will tell you what work has been done under warranty. helps find lemons.
Look for the condition of the engine bay. Excessive dirt accululating on the intercooler boots and pipes could mean lack of maintance. Check all the fluids, balljoints, and look at tire wear to see if any front end part is going out. I agree that once you go diesel you will never go back. 83,000 miles is nothing for these trucks. I bought my 99 with 167,000 miles on it and am at 213,000 miles with no problems. I had to replace the tranny at 200,000 but other then that no major problems. Just the regular maint, brakes, air filter, tires, and front wheel bearing. If you have a reputable diesel shop around you it might be worth the money to take it to them and have them do a good look over. I know this is not everything but I hope it points you in the right direction. Get the Oasis report mentioned, this will tell you what recalls and work done by the dealer from the truck being new.
You really should post this in the 7.3 forum. The guys there are awesome. Look in the 7.3 tech folder, I believe that's where the buying guide is.
Good luck
1999 F-450 V-10 4x4 with 94000
It has a 8' dump bed and a 2' or 16" tool box behind the cab.
Also has a boss V-plow
I think they are asking around $16500
That sound like a good truck guys, everything is pretty clean inside and outside.
The truck will not really be on the road that much so really gas mileage wont be to important.
So you think $16500 is kinda high??
They also said the truck was a STATE vehicle.

i have been looking around for dump trucks in my area. the are usually asking around $15000 for a v10 4x4 and then Newer diesels 4x4 are going for around $20000 and up.
Just last week i test drove a 1998 3500 Dodge with a dump it was 4x4 and diesel and he was wanting i think $15000.
So I think its kinda a good deal for my area plus it has plow.
also where did you find out the price of 8000 if you dont mind telling me
also where did you find out the price of 8000 if you dont mind telling me
thanks again!
No problem.
Thats about what the asking price is on most of the reg cab F450s I have seen around here.
I have never looked closely at one, just glanced as I'm driving by.
If thats what trucks go for where you live and it's what you need I would go for it.
Yep well i will be talking to the bank here this week. so we will see.
And after you said it was a little HIGH i started looking around here on prices and yes its about the average for that kind of truck. Yes it will work for me. Might even keep it for a few years and then sell for newer ford diesel. The bed is the on the small size of what i want but i figured i can sell the tool box on it and the bed for a bigger dump but it should work out this way.
