not sure many questions

hello i'm new to diesels but not old trucks.I've got a 92 f250 7.3 idi E4OD 4x4 with a sterling 3:55/54? ring grear.200+K miles.first question is will it handle 14K lbs being towed behind it everyday.or should i find and different gear? 3:73?,4:10.engine is noisy at start but when gets warm quites right down.hard to start cold but warms up no problems.i can hear the something ticking glow plugs?brakes is it possible to run F350 backing plates,shoes,drums,ect.ect. ?i've got time to mess with it because i'm useing a 97F350,460-E4OD 4x4/4:10's.to haul the machine(303.5 cat).would also like to put a standard tranny in the 92 F250 and get read of the E4OD if possible ? OH yeah the 31 is not my age it's a 1931 AA 1 1/2 ford with duals on the back.thanks

31 swfl,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

You must have an awful heavy trailer to be at 14K with a 303.5.

My trailer weighs close to 12K with a 304CR on it.

With a NA motor, hills are going to drag the speed way down.
An E4OD with 3.55 gears, lock out overdrive when you tow.
4.10 or 4.30 would be much better gears for towing with an overdrive tranny.

The diesel 250 HD already has a 350 frame and running gear.
All diesels were HD.

For better brakes, 1997 F Superduty (F450) hydraboost to replace the vacuum booster.
Runs off the power steering pump instead of vacuum.

Where are you located?

Talking

hi dave naples fl. the trailor i bought in Oregon in 06 title says 5k but have never taken it to the scales.it's a goose neck.kinda like the idea of 3:55 gears.down here its flat the only hills are the over passes.just wasn't if the e4od would take to kindly to it (3:55).the 460 is nice but what a pig.if i remember right you use to get a flat 10 mpg loaded or not this newer stuff is weak!have been looking for a diesel for some time and for 1000 bucks couldn't pass it up.just wish it was a short wheel base like the F350.but before i get all wraped up in the 92 F250 i have to finish the 31 AA.just thought i'd do my home work while finishing one project.

Those goose necks can be on the heavy side.

3.55 with the E4OD will be fine for running empty, but towing with gears that high, lock it out of overdrive.

Low altitude and flat country will help you out, but going that heavy you will want a turbo.

Diesel bell housings only fit diesel engines.

The 460 is close, but not close enough to bolt up.

im on the east coast in jupiter its a little north of palm beach. if you want to change the rear end it doesnt matter what motor its from if its out of a 250 or srw 350. check the gear ratio first they range from 3.08 to 4.10 in the sterling 10.25 i believe.

if i remember right the zf5 from 460 and diesel do have a different gear set and the diesel has a little lower and closer gears. and like dave said cant really swap over, though there was someone that machined one to fit on one of these forums. i dont know how the junkyards over there are for finding these old diesels but here its really hard to find anything let alone anything good.
