i just got this explorer from the auction its in great conditions , it has 147k miles its a xlt model , the little problem i'am having is when iam turning it start to make this vibration in the entire vehicle , it wont happen if iam driving in a straight line ,
i'am a little afraid its the transmission , any help will be greatly appreciated btw is this 4.0v6 has the problems with the plugs that it will spit them or the plugs will break when you are pulling them out ? thanks
If you have AWD (not likely with the V6) it probably isn't an issue with the transfer case, but as marragtop suggested, it does sound like it's stuck in 4WD mode. The AWD system (common with the V8) uses a VCU in the transfer case to prevent binding during turns, but 4WD (common with the V6) is not intended to be used on dry pavement and will bind since there is no VCU. This should be easy to check if you have the 4WD system by getting all four wheels off the ground and supported safely with jackstands.
As for the concern with plugs having issues with the head, that was only a common issue with the V8s, you should be fine with the plugs on your V6.
its a 4.0 v6 4wd , how would i do to disengage the 4wd , i have 3 buttom on the center console that said 1. 4wd auto 2 .4wd lo 3 .4wd hi i belive i should leave it at 4wd auto , how ever i don't have any light in the cluster that says 4wd

4wd auto, tells me you have a ControlTrack T/C.
The front drive shaft is connected all the time(rotates with wheels)but not connected to inside the T/C.
In the Auto function, 2 hall sensors in the T/C monitor the revolutions between the front and rear shaft, when a differential is sensed the puter applies power (DCV) to the electromagnetic clutch which connects the front shaft to the T/C drive output, Providing 4X4hi as required.
In the 4Hi position (power 12vdc) is applied to the electromagnetic clutch bypassing the hall sensors, resulting in 4X4Hi 50/50 F/R
In the 4Lo position, power is sent to the T/C shift motor that mechanically changes the gear set inside the T/C to give you 4X4Lo.
Hope that helps... P
Make sure the tires are all the same size, type, pressure and wear, otherwise the hall sensors will attempt 4x4 actuation.
i have a 2002 and it works basically as aquanaut says. If you are making gradual turns left or right and have this problem, either it stuck in 4 x 4, or you have a limit slip rear end and the clutch is sticking. Not sure if LS units were put in this truck, mine does NOT have that. If it does, putting the friction modifier in the rear axle can help. NOw if your at a stop, and crank the wheel full left or right and stomp on the throttle, and that is the vibration, then , its not really abnormal. Your ABS or tracton drive is trying to keep all 4 wheels driving the same speed, and thats hard to do on a tight turn from a stop.
