I can't tell if my shocks on my 03 F-450 are shot the front suspension is so stiff its hard to tell. They have 41,000 miles on them.
The shocks are not leaking but I noticed when I put new tires on the front I'am getting a little bounce. New shocks are 130 bucks each not cheap but its what we pay for autoparts in Canada.
I couldn't tell with the old tires if I had a problem because the ball joints were gone so the tires wore funny with that problem.
The shocks I'am getting are Gabriel its all what the local parts carries.
OEM shocks don't last too long...around 30-40k miles. Mine were shot at 30k miles and I've made them last until 40k (I didn't have the money). Most have that this is about normal. Most recommend Bilstein shocks (either the HD's or 5100's). There are a lot of places in the US that sell them for around $250 for all 4. Shop around. Good luck.
They're junk almost as soon as they roll off the lot. 41K is WAY overdue for factory shocks IMHO. I did mine at 24K and I have a 250. They were almost like a springy diving board. Gabriels are better than nothing, but Bilsteins would be the best IF you could get them. I know you're in a difficult situation but maybe you could find a Canadian company to ship them to you???
The F-450 uses the same shocks as a F-250 or F-350 so they are easy to find. I have heard lots of comments on Bilstien (sp) shocks never tried them. They would have to be mail order no local parts stores carry them.
It is really hard to tell if the shocks are worn out because the truck is so stiff on the front end.
So I'am right then the stock shocks are pretty much shot. I'am getting a little more lean than I used to too. Oh ya the previous owner of the truck had the truck pretty heavy it was some kind of service truck. And where the truck come from the city roads are pot hole alley. So many heavy trucks on the main routes the paved roads are like wash board.
Gabriels are the easiest for me to get the other parts stores carry Monroe shocks. The local parts store has Gabriels in stock the other stores I haven't phoned yet and they are a hour away.
With the exchange, shipping, and duties you would still be ahead money if you orderd frm the states.IMHO.I recently ordered some performance parts with free shipping total bill was 1100 us dollars with high exchange bought the tootal to just over 1200 cdn.Th only problem was the customs inspection cost,67 dollars per parcel bt i had two of them.Shocks should be able to be sent in one parcel.

My 03 FX4 came with Rancho shocks that lasted for ~15k miles. It became unsafe to tow my 12k # tow hauler, and when I removed them I could easily push the piston completely to the end of travel.
I replaced all of them with Bilstien, which I have used on all of my vehicles for many years, and they have lifetime warranty that I have used once without any questions or problems.
No I live in B.C. and our roads out here are lumpy. As I said the truck was loaded to close to gvw or carried heavy loads. They are not leaking oil and they look fine.
Trying to do a bounce test with a F-450 is impossible
I did some searching right from the Bilstein site they are 121.00 US and they don't show it for my truck. Anyhow they are that price I converted it to CND funds I'am not saving much money. Yes they are probably good shocks but for 131 each and I can have them tommorow I think I will go with the Gabriels.
I seem to be getting a little wheel hop on the front I know 19.5 tires ride a little rougher but the bounce is a little more than what it should be. The tires are not spin balanced no tire shop in the area can spin balance 19.5 wheels. The tire shop says they do alot of 19.5 tires and never had to balance them.
The parts store can get me KYB shocks too they are a little cheaper and they have to order them.
