'86 Ranger Starter-Flexplate problem
Engine and transmission split and off frame during a cab transplant. Upon starting, terrible racket as if starter jammed in flexplate. Starter gear was lunched. New starter, same symptoms: clunk and no turn over. Solinoid was new, battery fully charged, new battery cables. I was careful to mark the flex plate and torque converter during disassembly, so they went in same as they came out.
Possible issues:
Torqued nuts that held torque converter to flex plate through starter hole, not access port as specified in Haynes
Installed new(used) transmission support crosspiece. Used one was marked "MAN" but look identical to original. Reused pads brackets and bolts from original crossmember.
Could either of these issues affect the alignment of the flex plate and starter such that they'd jamb? I respect everyone's good intentions, but please respond if you've dealt with a similar issue or had an engine and transmission split at least once.
