Passenger side rear cylinder is making a rattling sound. I can notice this while under the hood,
At idle and when accelerating its sounds normal, but during decelerating and until it returns to
idle it rattles. I have it apart right now, and going to replace the rocker arms and push rods on
the rear cylinder. The rocker arms and rods dont appear to be all that worn, and dont think I want
to try and replace the springs at this time.
My question is about the options I seem to have with push rod length, the two available below.
Should I go with the longer, will it take up the slack?
Sealed Power Push Rod
8.55" O.A.L. Standard Size
8.616" O.A.L. Standard Size
To chech push rod length you will need a adjustable push rod & a checking spring. Remove the stock spring and put the checking spring on. Put some sort of marking compound on the valve tip. Adjust the push rod so there is zero lash. Slowly turn the engine over one valve cycle being careful not to compress the lifter. Remove the rocker note the patern it left in the valve tip. You want to get it centered on there so it's going to take a few adjustments on the push rod to get it right. After it's right remove it and check the length with a set of dial calipers. Then add IMO .030 to it for preload and thats the length you need.
Im just a guy with a truck, not a rocket scientist,
Its a stock engine, shouldnt I just be able to replace them with OEM rods. Im hoping replacing the slightly warn rockers will tighten things up, I think the rods in the truck are the 8.55 ones, but the 8.616 are also listed as standard for my truck. I dont know but I ordered both, I guess it will just be a try and see type of thing. Besides I dont have the tools or know how to remove a spring, wish I did cause they would be getting replaced aswell.. oh well thanks for the info.
