I have an 03 Expedition with a 4.6, It turns over every time, it just doesn't fire up 70% on the first try. You can do long cranks and it will start up most times the first try. Have 128,000 miles on it, don't want to tear it up... I read some where that the starter is not turning the engine over at the right rpm? Anybody heard this or have any ideas? It does have a new battery and fuel filter. Thanks
Start with a fuel filter change. It could be clogged enough to not give you enough fuel (although by the sounds of your problems, if this was the case, you'd probably experience other issues too). I would change it anyway. Could also be the check valve on the fuel pump that allows the fuel to bleed back and not pressurize the line. If you have a fuel gauge, you can hook to the shrader valve and see what the pressure is, while cranking. For a poor mans test, you could try to turn the key forward (no crank) and then off, then on again, then off then on and try cranking it. If it starts the first time, it is 'probably' the fuel pump needing replacement. (check valve is part of the fuel pump). I say probably, because this is a poor man's test. Shade tree mechanice type of test!
I'm having the same problem. I've been trying to resolve it for a few weeks now and it's getting worse. At first, it would start just fine when the truck was cold but only needed a few extra seconds or an extra try when engine was warm. That just doesn't sound like the check valve leaking down.
I don't notice a gas smell so I would think it's not my o rings.
What else could cause these symptoms?
I've recently replaced 1 bad coil, all spark plugs and boots and the IAC (intake air control) valve.
Any thoughts?
My 03 EXPY had issues cranking over on warm days. I cycle the key a few times before I start it and the vehicle starts on the first crank. Try cycling your key a few times. Turn it off and on. I figured the issue was my fuel pump loosing pressure. Cycling the key a few times built up pressure in my fuel pump. I had the fuel pump replaced and my issue has been fixed. If you cycle the key a few times and your vehicle starts on the first crank, it's most likely your fuel pump.
I had my fuel pressure tested and it was good (holds strong after turning off the key too).
Also, cycling the key really doesn't help. My wife thinks that it has gotten better since she started counting to ten before engaging the starter but I think that may be a factor of the cooler outdoor temps we're experiencing lately.
I'm just not convinced it's a fuel pump issue and don't want to spend another $500 on it just to discover it was not the problem (I still have a rear AC Evaporator Valve to replace and can't afford both).
any other thoughts that might help would be great. I'll look into the CTS as alloror suggests too.
Thanks everyone, keep those cards and letters coming,
