Hi guys, wanted some ideas..I have a 1988 f150 with a basic 302 v8. I have new napa wires, autolite plugs, and a msd cap and rotor. The msd cap and rotor made the largest difference of all. It has brass terminals, and low resistance. Plus, it has a part, that locks each wire tight to the cap! Works great. My truck will purr like a kitten like it never has before. I set the timing correct, because when I bought it it was quite off. The timing I belive is correct now. It runs awesome though, untill it warms up. Then sometimes, it will slightly miss. Other times it will missfire a little worse. I do have a slight coolant leak. It did not come up untill I lost my job. I am watching it closely though. Till i get another job. Is this related to my coolant leak making my truck run a little warm, and or do I have a bad sparkplug wire connection?? What do you think. Thanks for any help!!
Thanks for your help. I learned this a short while ago when it was jerking and missing bad. They were very well touching. I looked in my owners manual (this is called induction crossfire), saw this, and zip tied them apart. I have seperated all the wires apart with zip ties. It runs a little better. I will check a few more things. Thanks for the help. I was wondering that too, but that does not seem to be the case. It is just a very slight miss. One of my spark plug wire clips may be bad..
Yeah, I found the point in my manual where it says how to do a compression test, but it just says there should not be more than a 20% variation in 2 different compression readings. My truck was running well, and now isn't at all. I am figuring it out I hope with out too much money or I might sell the engine. I don't know at the moment. But, my timing chain may have slipped, and caused my valve timing to go pretty far off. It just happened. So, I am going to check all eight cyl's knowing this. I am going to unhook the fuel pump relay, and ignition coil, and have my friend turn the key for short periods of time while checking the compression. I will try to figure this out and get money to fix it. Or maybe park it before something else goes wrong. Maybe get another engine before I fix this and something else again goes bad. Other wise it could be an electrical or efi problem. If thats the case I may end up getting a carburated engine. 300 inline, or something similar when I can afford it. Hard to say.
Thanks, T
so, in your minds guys, whats the best way to see if my valve timing is off? Compression test, take the drivers side valve cover off, or take the front cover off? I think take the front cover off, and that will expose the gears to tell me if the valve timing is off. The starter turns over a lot easier, and it feels like everything is delayed. I corrected the ignition timing, but is my valve timing off?
problem solved. Took some time took off the front cover, and it was the timing chain. The chain was in fact stretch. New sprockets, and chain, and it runs 100 times better. Purrs like a kitten. All I have to do is adjust the timing a slight bit. I have it close, but it is slightly retarted. So, my friend will help me. I got the timing mark where it should be to me, but it needs to be slightly advanced. I will get help with this and be in much better shape. Thats why my truck never has ran 100%. Timing chain caused quite a few problems. Timing chain and gears, and seals + gaskets- carquest 38.57$ It got a lot more simple after I took off everything from the front of the engine. Now the process makes sence to me. Learned a lot from that. got the marks on the gear lined up with my friend and all. Its great, and I feel great because I learned a lot.
