Can I fix it?

I have an 03 with the 7.3 so this is my first time in here but a friend of mine is buying an 05 that the dealer says has a bad egr. Can I change the egr in the truck or is it something the dealer has to do? I work on my truck whenever I need to but I don't have an egr so I don't know about the farticular problem. Do I need any special tools to do it? Thanks for any help here, she just totalled her 150 and her husband is deployed so we need to get her back in a truck asap.

The EGR is no big deal to clean or replace, however, I would have the dealer fix anything that is wrong. These are very complex and expensive engines and I would not rely on his verbal troubleshooting. You also need an oasis report and carfax on the vehicle. I would also question if your friend needs a monster like this unless she is hauling pretty heavy. The maintenance costs on these vehicles is not cheap. Please do some homework before she owns an albatrose. I am past military and her husband doesn't need a weight around his neck. He has enough to worry about. JMHO.

Yeah she needs a pulling truck, she's big into horses and with her 150 she had to depend on other people to move her horse and if an emergency arose she had to hope she could get in touch with a friend in a hurry. It'll be her truck with her making the payments (he likes bikes and sportscars). I had thought about the possibility of the dealer making the wrong diagnosis and there being a chance of replacing the egr and the truck not be fixed. It's a great price at 12,500 if it doesn't cost a fortune for a dealership to repair.

Easy??????

Egr is easy, however, dealing with a dishonest dealer is NOT. Unless you have very good abilities for repairing 6.0s, I would steer clear. Unless, since the dealer says thats all it is, maybe they will guarantee to pick up any extra costs when the egr doesnt fix it, because it wont, imho. Working on these is nothing at all like working on a 7.3. Put it this way, IF THAT WAS ALL THAT WAS WRONG THE DEALER WOULD SPEND THE $100 AND 20 MINUTES TO CHANGE IT THEMSELVES.

that's my thought exactly. if that was all it was they would spend the cheap money fix it. raise the asking price and say nohing is wrong with it.

One thing to ask is "what do you mean a bad EGR?". The truck has an EGR VALVE and an EGR COOLER. The valve is easy to change out. The cooler is quite a bit harder, but certainly can be done in the driveway.

$100 and 20 minutes?! They quoted her $800-900! I got a price on the valve ($300) but I figured the dealer was charging twice that and $100 an hour for labor.

As stated already, she should not buy the truck without getting an OASIS report, and a Carfax would be very helpful as well. She would probably be better off with a V10 powered Super Duty. The '05 and up Super Duty's all have the TorqShift transmission which is perfect for towing duty.

I love my truck but the 6.0 is a hi-performance Diesel that is very expensive to repair and costs more to maintain than a gasoline powered vehicle. Since her husband is deployed and they both need a low maintenance vehicle she would be better off with a gasoline powered truck, IMHO.

Thanks alot for the info guys, I'll let her know but I think she really likes this truck (it is kinda flashy) so it may be in vain. If she does I'll be in here looking for help from time to time so bear with us, they're good people but can't afford to go to the stealership every time the truck hickups so I'll help all I can. Thanks again for the advice.

It may be a combo deak bad oil cooler with the egr cooler and even head gaskets. I figure if you do all 3 the cost of parts to be close to $1500 bucks for a oil cooler, egr delete and studs and gaskets minus any fluids and small parts. I would get a good diagnostics done and work it onto the deal since its a "easy" fix and hold the dealer to make good on it.

I have had the valve (about $400) and cooler(about $1200) both replaced on a 2004 6.0
These guys are correct, I had a 7.3 and it sure was a lot cheaper to maintain. Harley
