16.5" rims help

Ok so I'm tired of loosing bead while off-roading. I know someone mentioned before possibly welding a bead around the rim to help keep the tire on.

Has anyone else found a solution? I run 35" Swampers. Maybe I'm airing down too much. I usually wheel between 15-20psi.

They dont have the inner safety bead compared to other rims like 15s,16s,etc....I read on pirate, a way to use some 1/8(or so) steel round bar and weld it on the rim-kinda like a homemade/DIY safety bead. Some ppl on there have done it, but some had a little problem mounting/dismounting the tires off the rim...I have a set of steel 16.5s I was thinking of trying this on, but then again, I think it would be easier to either get hmmvv split rims with runflats OR use weld-on beadlocks.....they would both cost about the same....downside-both are not street legal. if I did the weld-on inner safety bead-no one will know but me and will pass inspection...
However, my truck is not really a hardcore offroader, so I dont really need to air down below 15 psi...so i think im safe using my rims as-is.

gyger1, how wide are your rims and tires??/.. usually a narrower rim will hold a bead better-theres more clamping force on the bead itself.

Holy cow, you are busting the tire off of the bead at 20 PSI? That is some trouble.
I was running 16.5's below 10 PSI without killing a bead.

Many 16.5" wheel owners were screwing the tire to the wheel at one time, then other ran screws in through the wheel behind the actual bead, and the screw itself actually kept the tire from popping off. Unfortunatley this did create some leaks and while some were succesful, others were not.
Best bet is a new set of tires and wheels. Even if yours are in great shape you can sell them to help offset the cost. Actually the newer they are the better. You might get just enough money to minimize out of pocket expense. Always nice to ge new shoes.
Leaving the 15.5" wheel stock will bring more cash than a set that have been messed around with.

As far as welding a saftey bead on the 16.5" wheel, that is a tough deal. Even getting the tire on is a *****! Weld to far towards the bead itself, and the bead distorts and wont seal, or leaks a bit at low pressures every time the tire rests in a certain spot. Been there too.
If you can get one to seat properly, and have to get the tire off,,,,,,,,good luck. I still have one wheel with a tire on it that I could never break down. Multiple machines and I still cant get it off. Just keep it around for conversations when guys stop by the shop and ask about these wheels.
No good in my book. Stay away from them if possible.

*** there is no such wheel with 0 backspacing. What it is is 4.5 backspacing with 0 offset!
