6637 pros? cons?

I am thinking about converting my stock air intake on an 03' F350 7.3L to the 6637 and i was hoping that yall could tell me some pros and cons to doing this? power increases? mpg increase? I was just hoping for some more information.

Thanks

I have the 6637, and I have seen no cons to this what so ever. But to be fair, if you really want a lot of readin, I will go chase up some other threads. But as far as a filter for most of the mods you might evr do, I see no reason not to do the 6637.

There will be more sounds coming from under your hood, some call it a drone, there will be a "swoosh" sound heard here and there, you will hear the turbo ever so more then prior.

With lots of milage under the belt, I saw on average .5 ( nothing to really get excited about ) mpg increase.

I installed the 6637 filter in my stock '00 PSD CC 6-speed SRW. After the installation I noticed that the throttle response at the low end was better. I did obtain an average 0.5mpg increase in fuel efficiency.

Yeah, you can hear the turbo a bit more. Yeah, you get a bit of a "woosh" or "pffffft" when you get into it and shift. To me, these are insignificant sounds. Supposedly they were there even with the stock filter installed.

There will be a slight drone (a hum) at certain RPM's. Mine occurs at 40mph and is more evident with the windows down.

At the risk of folks getting bent out of shape about this...

Before the installation, I could climb a 7% grade w/o pulling a load in 6th gear. I did not hear any turbo surge. The truck would accelerate up 7% grade.

After the installation, I could NOT climb a 7% grade w/o pulling a load in 6th gear. Turbo surge was very evident - I could hear it start "pfft-pfft-pfft-pfft-pfft-pfft" and then a higher pitch whistle "woo-woo-woo-woo". The truck would not accelerate up 7% grade anymore. It would actually lose speed and obviously to make the turbo surge quit, I have to downshift.

Supposedly a wicked wheel will cure the turbo surge issue with the stock turbo. From what I've read, the wicked wheel increases turbo lag. I have not installed a wicked wheel in my turbo. For now, I just shut the stereo off and listen when I pull a grade.

When I looked for pros and cons before installation, all I could find were pros. Sorry if this post is very cut and dry, but these are my observations w/o any embellishing or bs.

I can give you one CON. When you cut up the stock air box to fit the filter, you open up your filter to exposure from any liquids that splash up in the engine bay. This isn't going to be a problem for daily driving by any means but what ever the hell you do, don't fly into deep bodies of water.

I was dicking around in some braided river beds and went through a large body of water with way too much speed and water shot straight into the filter. Not the filters fault by any means, but I should have thought that through first.

At any rate, im working on a new 7.3 and I have another 6637 for it.

Hoping to take a nap when I get off work in an hour and then start swapping my injectors and HPOP from the old motor to the new motor. If I can button all that up today, I might have the new engine in by the end of this week.

I did it for about 4400 miles a few summers ago. When I got home I couldn't get an AIS fast enough.

Welcome to FTE

The 6637 is a great filter and the guys have done a good job of outlining that above. The main thing to remember is that you can always move on to a CAI in the future if you don't like the 6637, but it is expensive to go the other way. Here is a link for the 6637 kit, but you can just as easily source everything locally if you would like. Either way, with all I have to pick from I still run the 6637 and the only other intake I would switch over to would be the S&B bases on the filteration, quality and pricing. S&B is not also offering dry flow filters for those who don't want to clean and oil the filter media. Good luck on your choice, and let us know if we can help further. Great to have you on FTE.

It definatley all comes down to personal preference when it is based on the noise. Some people notice it, some don't.

Don't forget to consider Pete's filter cover for it. It well help increase the live of your filter in off road/dusty environments.
