I just replaced my head gasket and I was thinking to myself after tightening down all the rocker arms... Is there a particular way to tighten down these rockers or can I just go down the line ***** nilly without doing anything like bringing each cylinder to top dead before tightening or something like that...?
Can someone inform me? I'm not exactly a machinist but I really want to get this right.
Thanks!
By the by: its a 1981 300 4.9 Are these rockers self adjusting?
Great! I tightened them down to 23 FP and left the valve cover off to see if any froth came out (IE more damn coolant in the oil) and it started up fine running fast. I let it sit for a bit and hit the accelerator to bring it down to idle. It died immediatly. She had a hard time starting up again and now she revs in waves. Revving and almost dieing in turn
I havent readjusted my carb yet. the last two cylinders I found were not firing (bad plugs) previously which is remarkable because she ran smooth enough to balance a coin on so I am thinking that the extra load has put the carb way out of adjustment and I just need put it right?
Was it just doing that because the valve cover was off and the corresponding hoses not hooked up? It was very late so I just swore and went to bed muttering...
The valve cover off wouldn't affect the running, that's just to keep oil from splattering all over the engine bay. However, if you removed hoses to access the valve cover and missed one or two, that definitely could. I remember fighting to get mine running after removing the valve cover and realized I had unplugged the brake booster vacuum line because it was in the way. Massive vacuum leak there. Could be something similar.
AB is right, definetly sounds like a vacuum leak. after checking your hoses and what not check for it using a can of carb cleaner, just spray it around and when the rpm's go up you have found your leak.
