Flowmaster Catback #2

My dad got tired of his old loud exhaust on his 03' CC V10 so I got him a Flowmaster #17229 catback to put on his truck. he already has the ebay y-pipe installed. The install was easy the hardest part was getting the old system off. Over labor day weekend I got to install it. I tossed all the clamps and the clamp/hanger that came with the kit. I used Summits 3" stainless clamps and fabbed up a new clamp/hanger (outlet of muffler) out of stainless to replace the kits. I have to tack the exhaust yet in case he didn't like the sound.

47" long piece straight piece of 3" pipe. I bought mandrel bends but didn't need them.($50 down the drain) Going to add another hanger in the center of pipe when I weld it up.

Notice in the last two pics the collars on the rear tailpipe hanger. I made two stainless shaft collars (1/2"ID) to replace the cheesy clips included in the kit. The spacers make it possible to shift the tailpipe a little for tire and shock clearence and keep the hanger from slipping out of the rubber.

The exhaust tip is a 3"in/3.5"out tip that I cut off his old system, polished, shortened and welded on. The tailpipe is cut off right at the tips inlet.

Soundwise it sounds real nice. You can hear a lot of flutter out the tailpipe between 2300-3000rpm where the exhaust is its loudest. All the other places in the rpm sounds great. I think the poor design of the stock manifolds is what causes the flutter, the stock y-pipe was just a bandaid.

Nice install! I wish they made a cat back for an E 350 Van. I left messages with two muffler shops to see if they would install that same muffler with the 3.5" tail pipe and neither returned my call. I guess thats an odd size. Anybody seen a kit that fits a van?

Nice!

I had a dream last night where I intentionally wrecked my muffler just so I could justify to the wife putting something aftermarket on it. Strange dream, huh?

What flowmaster model muffler is that?

dkf,
I would PM but don't have enough posts yet. Do you know if the Flowmaster #17229 or 17345 (the stainless version) will fit on an '03 Excursion V-10? Excursion is not listed for the 17229 or the 17345 but the F-250 is. I called Flowmaster and they just say, "there must be a reason the Excursion isn't listed." The only 2 differences I can see are the length of the intermediate pipe, which can be cut, and the Excursion has the fuel tank in place of the spare tire.

I compared your pictures to the bends of my pipe and honestly can't see a difference. I like the 17345 because it is stainless all the way, but I hate to buy it then have it not fit. I have no local shop in Anchorage with a mandrel bender either. My stock pipe is in good shape and the same diameter with mandrel bends so I could get the muffler and tip separately. Also, do you think the heat shield is necessary since the muffler is under the rearmost seat?

If you don't know I will post in the Excursion Forum.

Thanks,
Ex03AK

The 17229 and 17345 kits are both aluminized steel. Flowmaster has recently started making a select few mufflers and exhuast systems in 409SS but I doubt they will make a SS kit for the SD gassers. The difference between the two kits is that the 17345 has a 1pc tailpipe that exits slightly farther forward than the 17229's tailpipe and the 17345 comes with a stainless exhaust tip.(FMs tips are not so great from what I've seen) The 1229's tailpipe is 2 pieces and exits a little farther back and does not come with a tip. One thing to keep in mind is the FM70BB2 muffler is going to cost you around $150 alone and the 17229 sells for around $230. I got both 17229 kits from autoanything and they ship free in the lower 48. Summit or Jegs will charge you there "Handling Fee" plus an oversize charge to ship the same kit in the lower 48. I think you best bet is to get a quote to AK from autoanything if you decide to go that route. Autoanything was running a $20 off special a while ago for FTE members $20 off a $200 purchase using "FTEDEAL", don't know if it works anymore.

You could try to see if the SD and EX of similar years has the same exhaust system part #. BTW the spare tire in the pic is a 33" tire. If all else fails just replace the stock muffler. I looked on summits site and compared Gibson catback PNs for the Ex to the F-250 of the same year and no match so I don't know what to say. The pics of the tailpipes look the same though.

As for the heatshields, I hate them and never put them on my trucks. There was a decent amount of room around the muffler on both my SC and my dads CC. Also the FM70 is not as big as the stock muffler and doesn't get as hot as the stocker either. I doubt you'll have issues and there is probably a factory heat shield matt glued to the bottom of your ex anyway.

Thanks dkf.
As always, good advice. You're right about the aluminized 17345. I guess I should learn to read. I just checked and there is in fact an aluminum heat shield bolted to the underbody. Looks like a FM70BB2 and a stainless tip for me. I can't risk $75 in shipping to find out the pipe doesn't fit. My stock tail pipe is in good shape anyway. Now I just need to shop for a tip...

A 3"in/4"out 12" long stainless tip will fit nice and look good. A local exhaust shop should have one or be able to get one. IMO the 15degree slash cut tips look the best.
