I was just checking out some different lockers for the back of my 95 F150 and came across the ford racing traction lok for the 31 spline 8.8
really good price on it,I was wondering if anyone here has ever put one in their truck?
They were the factory limited slip option, so they were installed in a lot of trucks. In stock form they are a little on the weak side in terms of traction, but you can replace some of the shims with friction disks and make it a lot stiffer. In terms of reliability they are a very good unit.
I just got of the phone with ford and halifax and he can get me the one with the carbon fiber clutches for 400 including shipping so I figure that should work, the truck is a 4x4 and it won't ever see much if any abuse, except the winter theres some snow on the ground.I just want to give it a little extra traction.get at least three wheels spinning the same time.
ahh I think the 10000 miles or less I drive a year I should be fine with a clutch type unit.I do agree the true trac is a nicer unit, but budget is a big word with this old truck.considering I need to order almost $1000 worth of sheet metal for it in the next couple of weeks.
One problem with a limited slip in the snow is that the back end will break loose and fishtail a LOT easier because instead of one wheel slipping and other trying to keep it straight, you have two wheels slipping, giving the back end no traction at all. You might find it a little more challenging in the snow and ice. You will definitely want to keep plenty of extra weight back there in the winter.
yes I will be keeping the extra weight in it,I figure about 300 pounds right behind the cab should do the trick, this is the first 4x4 I have ever had without a posi/trac-lok of some sort since a long time.and I do remember the 92 F150 4x4 I had was open in the back and useless in the snow.they are a fairly light truck considering the size of them.so this should help it a fair bit.
I finally got around to installing the trac-lok.nice part for the price.two hours later its all in and works like a charm.now its all ready for the snow.last week I replaced the axle joints, spindle bearings, passenger side ball joints and put on a new set of the warn premium hubs.now I just have to get a new hinge for the cap and it will be winter ready.
