Brake Rotors

I am in dire need of new front brakes, rotors and pads.
I know for a fact that these can not be merely turned, so I need to get new ones.
now, I am on a fixed budget, by fixed, I mean very very cheap.

can I get a real simple pro and con of buying rotors from a junkyard ?
I don't really have the finances to get brand new rotors, so JY rotors are pretty much my only choice....

bring a powerful magnet, stick it to the rotor & sprinkle iron filings on the rotor. this should help check for cracks.

Junkyard rotors, Pros and Cons.

Pros:
Cheaper than new

Cons:
May need to be turned

May not be any good - may be too thin, may have "hot spots" that can't be turned, may have cracks

Will almost certainly be thinner than new, so they won't last as long as new ones.

For units with the hub/bearings integral - you will have to beat out the old outer races to put your new ones in.

Before you go the junkyard route, look up the prices for new rotors. Find out what it will cost to have used rotors turned. You will need that information to decide if the junkyard price is a good deal or not.

Try O'reilly, $56 each for the hub and rotor.

how do I know if I have the hub/bearing unit?

1985, f250 351w, 8500 gvwr

autozone.com has 2 different sets, one for under 8500, and one for over 8500, is that what makes the difference? (sorry for all the questions)

I believe they are split by 8600 and up or 8600 and down...I could be wrong. It looks like all of these come with the hubs integral, but they are not like unit bearing style hubs of the later Ford trucks.

so I shouldn't have to worry about bearings when I swap rotors?
and idk about oreily, but the zone splits them at 8500, makes no difference to me though

depends on the condition of the bearings.

if they're good, you can swap 'em out...if they've got flat spots you'd be better off replacing them before you burn your spindle.

You should inspect the bearings at the least, but should consider replacing bearings/races/seals to ensure everything is fresh.

Pick Your Part lists rotors for 25 dollars each plus 3 dollar core, so I guess they could work with the budget you have, but they are a BIG gamble.

You could always go to the junkyard anyway and have a look around. Sometimes you might get lucky and find a truck that was wrecked with near new rotors on it. I got 2 near brand new guards for mine off a truck that was a total rustbucket. Also once got a complete set of performance springs and suspension bushes that looked like they were put on the car the day it was wrecked. Cost me $100 for $600 worth of gear once I took the brand name stickers off them and played dumb with the attendant.

If you have time rather than money on your side, take a look around, you might find some good bargains.
