4 speed trans

4 speed trans

i am new into the f350 world and i have a 4 speed automatic trans. it seems to shift hard, in i think the second gear(about 35 mph) is that ok or should i be concerned?
also what type of trans fluid should i be using.......01 f-350 7.3 diesel

Good quick firm shift's are good, and easier on the trans, Ford says Mercon on the ATF, as of right now i have Schaeffers ATF. Your shifts seem to sound OK.

Ford says MERCON V, not MERCON. Ford discontinued MERCON in 2007.

Ok, I'm hijacking this thread for a minute. Mark, I'm going to install a Transgo HD2 and I decided to flush while I'm at it. I went and got 20 quarts of MERCON V today, but my dad saw he saw gallon jugs of MERCON a lot cheaper. Is it still OK to use MERCON, or is MERCON V the only ATF I can use?

The trans was designed to use MERCON. If it is really still the same formula that it was when Ford monitored it, then it's fine.

MERCON V costs more because it is a better fluid.
