Im sure a "slight" overfill wont hurt much...it is vented so it wont increase internal presure and blow out seals....but obviously too much would prolly create too much drag on the r/p...however, the best thing is to know the capacity for your intended axle and fill it accordingly....
Ohh. That explains it. I never knew Ford put 8.8 axles in full size pickups...I thought only the Rangers & Explorers.
Did Ford still put in 9"s into the '80s, or the '90s? Did the 8.8 replace the 9"?
Im sure someone else will chime in, but yea they offered the 9" until the mid 80s. the 8.8 was a pretty standard half ton axle in both 2wd and 4wd trucks....
Proud to say there are no runs, drips or errors concerning my diff fluid change.
I've read a few POSTS here about letting RTV set. The directions say you don't need to.
I like watching TiVo'd Horsepower TV programs on SPIKE (think there are 4 of them) and they did a thin bead of RTV on both the Diff and the cover then spread with a throw-away glove (I used a baggie).
So - you don't need to let it set and you don't need a gob of RTV.
That old Diff fluid came out like it was 10W or something less. I can't believe Ford recommends changes at 100K miles.
Is it me or does my truck seem to drive (not run) a little smoother now?

These trucks just love it when they get new fluid. And yeah-they do seem to drive better afterwards. Just like they do when you wash and wax them.
You did put synthetic fluid back in -right?? Helps with the MPG.
Phoneman91 - put Valvoline Durablend 80/90 in it. Part synth, part regular. Only other type they had was the Mobile1 and was past my price range.
From what I remember from the last diff fluid change I had done by QuickLube in my Durango - I probably saved $75.00 doing it myself. And it as a learning experience and an adventure.
I'll do my '01 4.7L Durango from now on as well. Dodge says every 40K miles.
How is everything in Wylie ?? I use to live in Abilene and had a job in Sweetwater. 88 mile around trip each day for almost 5 years. Got a lot of tickets going thru Merkel. I miss living in Texas-except for that ticket thing !!
