E4OD only moves in drive

Hi All

Driving home the other day truck was acting slugish.
I realized I was stuck in Drive, truck would not go in
1st or 2nd. I stopped at a store to check fluid looked
a little low so I added a quart.

I put it in reverse and it would not move. Will not move in
1 or 2 either I could not even get it in neutral to roll out of
parking space. I used a floor jack to lift the rear end and roll
back, drove home slowly in drive.

I'll pull codes today and post back

Any Ideas in the mean time??

Thanks

OK I pulled codes

KOEO

current codes clean
Stored codes MLPS out of range, VSS out of range

I unplugged the MLPS when I was stuck at the store, to see
if I could get it to shift to neutral.

VSS is not expensive but would it keep trans from shifting?

KOER

unable to maintain high rpm during self test.

Other background info.

Last month I was having issues with the trans slamming into gear
between 1-2,2-3. Codes indicvated TPS and MLPS so both were
replaced and problem went away.

That's a mechanical failure inside the trans. There is nothing in the electronics that will keep it from moving in reverse.

If I drop the pan can I see "mechanical failures" ?

What should I look for?

Are there tests I can do to narrow down the problem?

Here is a little more background.

Bought truck used in 2004, did fluid and filter change at 80,000
(don't know previous history) also installed pan with drain plug.

truck has 150,000 now and I have changed fluid 3 times since 80,000 service. (drain the pan and TC get about 12 of the 16 quarts out and replace.)

I will disconect battery tonight, to clear codes, install VSS, Filter and fluid tomorrow reconect battery try to test drive and pull codes again.

I am doubtfull this will make any difference but it is all I got untill I get more feed back from you all or pay someone to look at it..

Thanks for looking and I appreciate any and all input.

If parts fell into the pan you'll be able to see them. If they didn't, you won't. It's not a sure thing. It is a sure thing that something is wrong with the reverse clutch and you can't get to the reverse clutch through the pan.

Ok, I dropped the pan.

I would say the presence of roller bearings and metal
shavings in the pan would indicate mechanical failure.

I've seen rebuilt units with 36 month waranty on the internet for as low
as $999.00 And I seen posts were people spent $2500.00 for a rebuild.

What is a fair price for rebuild job?

If I put a new, used, or rebuilt in does it take any special tech
skills or can you just remove and replace?

I want to try to put in a used tranny.

I know not all E4ods are the same, but which
ones will fit behind my 4.9?

Thanks

Ones that came from a 4.9L, 5.0L, or 5.8L. You also MUST get a 4x2 trans, a 4x4 will not work.

help please, help

Here's where I'm at

Pulled tranny, put in used tranny, lots of vibration while
stopped and in gear.

If i'm stopped the only things moving are TC and flywheel??
Does the trans pump move in this situation?
What else could cause Vibration?

Ok I pulled the tranny. I got a new TC and a New fly wheel.
Installed and still have vibration. I am out of money and time, my
father in law has recalled his "loaner car"

I have never done this before, is there something I could be doing wrong
that is not obvious to me?

Vibration is constant but worse when in gear and stopped.

Please help
Don

Are you certain the engine doesn't have a miss? There isn't much in the trans that can do this.

When stopped the flex plate (what you called a flywheel,) torque converter, and pump are turning.
