won't turn over with key

87 F250, 460, we can jump the solenoid to start, but the key switch doesn't work. Tried new key switch, ign. switch, and solenoid, nadaa. Would a bad ignition module cause it to not turn over?? It is mounted on the distributor. Thanks for any ideas.

It's fuel inj. too.

No the ignition module will not cause it not turn over.
More than likely you have a bad P/N switch down on the side of the transmission or with the clutch peddle.

If the actuator rod is not pushing the tab on the ignition module it won't turn over. If the ignition module is bad I doubt that it would turn over with the key.

Try jumping from the small trigger wire's post to the hot terminal on the solenoid coming from the battery.
If it clicks and turns over it's the ignition switch, if nothing happens it is the solenoid.

Do you have a tilt column? Are you sure the actuator rod is moving the switch?
Did you try adjusting the ignition switch's position -up- on the column.

How did this problem start?.

My 87 auto tranny had the same problem. All I had to do was adjust linkage on tranny and the column so the P/N switch knew the truck was in park. I guess over time these things get out of adjustment.

The way I found out I needed to do the adjustment was I pulled the gear shift handle up while the truck was in park and it the key started the truck.

Yes it does have tilt, and the rod is moving the ign. switch, so I don't think that is the problem. It is an automatic, and the pickup has been setting for about 3-4 months. We also replaced the solenoid and that didn't help.

Still sounds like the wiring or P/N switch on the side of the transmission to me.

Sounds good to me also, I will look for the P/N switch on tranny. I've never replaced one of those before. Thanks

Yes it makes a difference if it is a 3 speed or a 4 speed Auto Transmission.
3 speed would be the C6 and 4 speed would be an AOD.

C6 P/N Switch:

AOD P/N Switch:

One of the 4 wires that go into the P/N switch on the tranny was cut, spliced it together, and she started right up!
