I don't know if its just me or what but after looking through some of the posts and talking with some people it seems the 5M color code was not so uncommon as everyone thinks. I just don't understand why I can't find a definitive document to verify the 5M code on a 66 Ford F100 custom cab short box.
Not necessarily uncommon, just shouldn't exist. No one can guarantee the color because it wasn't an option, that doesn't mean you couldn't get it. I could find 10+ trucks here online in just a few minutes with that same code.
Most people say the color matches Signal Flare Red paint code number 5 used on 1966 mustangs, also say it looks orange not red. Was only available in 66 even on mustangs. And of course M is Wimbledon white.
The obvious reason for using mustang paint would be that it was available, special order yes but not a custom mix. If it had been a special mixed color, there would be no paint code assumedly because ford could not mix paint on an assembly line.
Ford Fleet colors included all colors in the Ford product lines and you could order any color offered on any vehicle. The standard truck colors were much more limited but if you were willing to wait to get your vehicle you could order any color Ford offered.

5 = Signal Flare Red = 1966 Mustang.

AE = Acrylic Enamel / 60 = 1960 = First year Acrylic Enamel was used / TUP = Touch Up Paint.
If Ford offered a color for cars, and someone wanted Ford to paint their truck that color, Ford would oblige.
There was no additional charge, because this is was considered an R.P.O. = Regular Production Order.
Ford also painted vehicles non factory colors. When this occurs, there is no COLOR code, and the vehicle has a 6 digit DSO.
Examples of this are Coca-Cola Red, Bell Telephone Green, USAF Blue. A 6 digit DSO denotes a Domestic Special Order.
Definitive Document:
I have the actual 1966 factory Ford Color Chip Chart the dealers used at the parts counter.
It has all the chips which are glued to the heavy paper the chart is composed of.
You cannot get any other document more definitive then this.
I think Poppy red was a color code "S" but my code is definatly a "5". I suppose if one was ordered then other people would see it and say thats a sharp color, what color is it and then they would order one.

S = Poppy Red aka Vermillion = 1967 Trucks, Bronco's, Econolines / S = Vermillion aka Calypso Coral = 1970/71 Passenger Cars, 72 Bronco.

That's true but wouldn't you think the mustangs had a bit of advertisement too? People would see it and say thats a sharp stang, wonder if I could get that color on a truck? Same thing
Well I appreciate all the help on this one it seems that it is for sure signal flare red. I am still not sure weather or not to go back to the color, if it was a rarity due to the the production line only putting out so many of them it might of swayed me but it seems it was a personal preference that kept the numbers down. Thanks again and keep um rollin.
I will try to post a picture of mine in my gallery tonight. My truck was ordered with the 5M code. That color is signal flare red from the mustang line. I am completing a 3 year frame off on this thing and I have to tell you it just about drove me nuts in the begining. We have owned the truck since 68 and I finally tracked down the original owner. He ordered it from the factory K.C. with signal flare red. He says the best he remembers it cost an additional $90.00....but as he said it had been a looonng time.
By the way everybody that has seen the color thanks its great. Stay with it you won't regret it.
