LT265/75R16 vs LT285/75R16 0n STOCK rims.

2004 F250, 5.4 gas,FX4, Super Cab, short bed, Lariat, Camper pkg. Stock Aluminum rims.
Currently running BF Goodrich Rugged Trail TA LT265/75R16 E tires, I would like to go to a 285 but worry rim width affecting tire performance and wear. I am looking at the Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrack 265 or 285 load range E.
Contacted Tire Rack and they advised my stock rims are 7" and would cause improper tire "profile" leading to wear problems, but the Goodyear store personnel said it would be fine. But the Goodyear web site list "Approved Rim widths of 7.5 - 9.0 for the 285 and 7.0 - 8.0 for the 265 - BUT I don't know what my "Rim Width" is!
QUESTIONS:
What is the width of the tire "Rim Width" on my stock rims?
What problems could I expect, if any, if I went to the 285 size?
How does the Goodyear Wrangler DuratraTrack stack up?
How does the Goodyear Wrangler Authority AT, a Wal Mart exclusive, stack up?
Open for suggestions, cussin's, and discussin's.
Thanks

Looks like you have the exact same configuration as my truck but I have the 6.8l. I've had 285/75R16 D on my truck for over 25k miles with no problems. My dad has had 4-5 sets of BFG A/Ts between his 99' and 03' SDs and they always wore very well. I've heard of guys having 315s on stock rims too. They fit perfect, ride and grip much better than the 235/85s I had on stock. I don't notice any weird wear. I do run less air in the rears than the fronts when I'm empty. (45-50 rears and 55-60 fronts) Running less air in the rears allows more of the tread to contact the road and wear more even. Rotate the tires regularly and they will wear great.

I ran 285s on my stock rims for about 120,000 miles. One time I had 305s, and I did notice improper tire wear on the 305s, but never on the 285s. Your speedo will also be more correct with 285s. Mine is dead on with 285s.

I too have the 285 load range E's with no issues at all on my truck. Stock rims, only difference is that I have the long bed 250SD.

Give it shot, I think you will be pleased with that size.

I've had both Goodyear Silent Armors, and now the Nitto Highway Grapplers in 285/75R16 on the stock 16" rims, nothing out of the ordinary.

Funny, the stock rims are 7" wide. The Goodyears said only down to 7.5", and the Nittos say down to 7" on the sticker on the tire, but 7.5" on the website.

Either way, no issues.

Thanks

Thanks for all the input, I think I'll try the 285/75R16 E's - if I can afford them.
Thanks again to all who responded.

The silent armour tires wear really, really well for how heavy our trucks are, and for my driving style. Typically I would get 30k-35k out of a set of tires. Right now I am at that 30k-35k, and I am sitting on 7/32 still.

running 315's on the stock rims... a little more flex from the tires on the highway, nothing too crazy... just bought this new set of nitto terragrapplers and so far I love them... just need to do the chalk test so I can get them to wear evenly... also, stripped on of the mounting bolts off the front swaybar so it's disconnected right now and let me tell you... IT IS A SCARY RIDE with no sway bar, lol... gonna make it a quick disconnect, though... see how this turns out... next, making an adjustable track bar...

I ran the 285/75r16 goodyear ats tires for a little while and compared to the michelin ltx 265/75/r16 the good years seemed to stick better on pavement. They were also better in the dirt. I just stepped up to 315/75/16 bfg mt and other than the noise am very pleased with them. I was told the 285's would rub a little and on my truck they didn't. Now the 315's that is a different story they rub on the back of the driver spring and the front of the passenger side spring. I really liked the 285's they seemed to fill the fender wells. I'm hoping when and if I get about 2" of lift the same will be true for the 315's

Well, I went with the Goodyear Wrangler Duratracks, LT285/75R16 load Range E.
NO PROLBEMS.
Look good, seem to ride smoother that stock BFG's I had - at least the wife thinks so, and that counts - haven't had them in serious mud but if looks are any indication they ought to be awsome. NOT noisy, really suprised how quite they are for looking so agressive. You can hear a little hum at highway speed but not enough to have to turn the radio up and it doesn't effect normal conversation, you have to listen for it or you won't notice it.
The increase in size corrected a speedo error I had, 265's speedo read 2-3 mph faster then GPS indicated, 285's dead on the money w/the GPS. Now I've got to find a freindly Smoky to run it thru radar to verify speedo's accuracy, just to be on the safe side.
MPG dropped about 2 mpg, part of that I beleive is due to the corrected speedo/
odometer, and part probably due to heavier tire.
Thank you all for the input, I value the experiences and input from this group.

You will find that 285s do match the factory odometer, atleast in the SRW with 3.73s. They always make the speedo just a little faster then actual, as a cover your own @$$ from the factory, to eliminate law suites. MPG will probably even out some. The difference between bald 265s, and new 285s is about 3 or more inches in diameter.
