fuel filter change question

i am all set to do this seems like a 15 minute repair. my question is if i pull the lines off the fuel filter will the gas shoot out all over me cause of the pressure in the lines?

should i release the pressure

you can bleed the pressure off (also pull the fuse) or just let the truck sit for a hour and that will result in the pressure to decrease.

when i change mine, i just park the truck for the night and the first thing in the morning i pull the filter (no gas spraying everywhere).

on my old volkswagen you had to take the fuel pump fuse out and then start the car and run it until it stalled. I don't know if thats bad for the engine or anything but that's what the hanes manual said to do. Worked like a charm.

you can bleed the pressure from the schrader valve on the fuel rail. Just bleed it into a rag or something.

That fuel filter holds a good amount of gas though, so be ready with a small bucket. disconnect one side then let it drain out into the bucket.

I didn't do this, so I got gas ALL OVER ME while fighting with those stupid fittings and those POS fitting tools.

You didn't mention the model but in general you will need to release the pressure and will need a special tool to remove the filter from the hoses.

You can just let the truck sit overnight or release the valve use a catch pan under the valve and use a drain pan under the filter to catch any gas that does escape, mostly thru gravity. The tool is a plastic disc kind of thing with a collar that slips under the filter locks to release the hoses.

Have an extinguisher and maybe a friend handy to put you out just in case.

If your filter is located alongside the frame rail like my 94 F250, the hardest part is getting enough leverage in the tight space to remove and replace the hoses.

Be careful when putting the hoses back on. Some of the filters have flimsy end caps and may "dent" if you put too much pressure on them when installing the hoses.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

are these the same tubing lock tools used on tranny cooler and fuel lines? if so, I have a set in my toolbox already!.. that will be a first.. having the tools ahead of the job!!
