Any advice

In the coming couple of weeks I have to do the following jobs.
1. replace belt tensioner and idler
2. replace thermostat and top and bottom hose
3. oil and filter change
Any traps for young players I may come across or advice that may make life easier. Also is there anything else I should do while I have some of these things apart. I read the other day the cdr needs cleaning occasionaly with gas (petrol?). Should I do that aswell? Also can anyone give me a link to a manufacturer of trans and coolant filter heads that you would recomend for these trucks? Sorry for so many questions but can't keep truck off the road for to long so any help greatly appreciated.

As far as the tensioner goes, do you have one of the hydraulically dampened tensioners?

I don't know if you've looked into them or not, but they're difficult to find...I ended up not having to replace mine, but the only one I could locate was Motorcraft and it was $100 US. Most parts stores show the regular spring tensioner for these engines but that is not always used.

Oil changes are easy, most people switch to a Powerstroke filter which will go right on.

Have not done my thermostat so no help there.

BTW I cleaned my CDR out with brake parts cleaner.

I would do the thermostat and hoses while you have the belt off.

The hydro dampened tensioner is easy to identify... it has a little shock hanging off of it. It looks pretty goofy.

Use only an OEM thermostat!

Don't use the gasser-style thermostat they sell at a typical parts store.

Someone here should chime in with a part number.

Absolutely, and you can only get them from ford or international. Some are able to get thermostats that work from autoparts stores, but make sure its NOT the kind that has an internal bypass.

Also, when you remove the thermostat housing, pay attention in case the check ball falls out. Once you have it in your hand and look at the underside, you will see the check ball passage. If the ball doesn't fall out, make sure it can still move up and down in its bore freely.

I bought all motorcraft parts from rockauto. the thermostat part number I got from this forum so I think I should be right. The tensioner is not the one with the shock and it was apparently only used on the 94 idi but I got one from rockauto for $55 so I'm pretty happy with that.
